Look it's NEGATIVE MAN.

Thinking of it in terms of velocity and distance is pretty primitive, IMO. There could be major breakthroughs and discoveries just around the corner that will alter our perception of the universe.

Being curious about the world and universe around you is not pathetic as you paint it. That's about the most horribly ignorant thing that I have ever heard.

Man, I love watching the OT trying to figure out the implications of things that were known 100 years ago.

Tomorrow, we tackle magnets.

To expand as a fricking species and save us from extinction. Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.
I don't think I hate anything more than this instant gratification mindset.

A 10 milligram particle striking a spaceship travelling at 10% speed of light would equal the kinetic energy of 100 kilograms of TNT.
that is actually a pretty interesting point...and one that I haven't thought of..
If all that kinetic energy could be transferred into propulsion - that would be interesting

We will do it when like in the book "Contact" another civilization sends us detailed instructions on how to do it.

History is full of examples of things achieved when many said they could not be done. I don't know when we will be capable of interstellar travel but I firmly believe that day will come.
Most of us will probably not see it, but you never know.

We get it. This topic goes way over your head. It's okay. You aren't being forced to click on threads like this.
No, I just don't care about something that will not effect me at all.

Depends on how far we have to go. For intergalactic travel we would need to figure out wormholes but for within 20 light years or so? (and there are plenty star systems to search within 20 ly) I don't think we're to far from being able to get there within a human lifetime.

When Jupiter aligns with Mars.

There is always talk of the human body never being able to handle space travel so it will never happen. In the future there will be the option of genetic manipulation or inserting of the human conscious into a computer or robot to handle space travel.

What in the frick is up with all these space threads being started lately. I don't care if there's aliens out there, I don't care if there's another habitable planet out there, I don't care what type of planet/civilization (whether it's type-0 or type-123333356) we are part of. I've got enough shite to keep my mind occupied.

exactly
The reality as we understand it of mass/distance/velocity does not allow for interstellar space travel...it just cannot happen in a manner that is useful. we will get there one day but it will not be by pushing mass thru space at high speed

We could theoretically leave the solar system now using a generation ship...I.E. launch a ship that gets as close to light-speed as possible, coasts the majority of the way there, then decelerates for the final leg of the journey.
The humans inside would create families, make babies, and teach successive generations how to operate, maintain, and repair the starship.
Depending on the distance involved, it could wind up being the great-grandchildren of the original passengers who actually reach the new star system.
All of this begs the question...who would sign up for such a voyage? What are the moral questions involved in condemning one or more generations of human beings to live inside a space ship?
I basically think that unless faster than light travel is invented, or alternately, suspended animation, this mode of star flight would only be used as a last resort.
Like the earth or the sun in mortal peril, and humanity needs to leave or die out.
