Lets just assume the fact that there is a habitable system or planet outside our system or galaxy, but how the hell could we even get onto it? considering our technologic advances that we have now that are still obsolete for interstellar travel?

Unless wormholes are a real thing or we figure out how to teleport, its a pipe dream. Space is too big.

What in the frick is up with all these space threads being started lately. I don't care if there's aliens out there, I don't care if there's another habitable planet out there, I don't care what type of planet/civilization (whether it's type-0 or type-123333356) we are part of. I've got enough shite to keep my mind occupied.

And I'm sure the aliens out there don't give a frick about it either.

I wouldn't want to visit any planet that would accept visitors from Earth.

Maybe someday to one star system over, but that's about it I would think. To put it in perspective, if you were traveling at the speed of light it would take over 100 THOUSAND years to cross the milky way from one end to the other.

Voyager I left earth in 1977 and has only made it 17 light hours away.

Not in the foreseeable future. As far as we know, for it to even be feasible, wormholes need to be in the equation, but we can't even produce enough energy on our planet to do it.

Never say never but probably never. Like was said above, space is just too damned big. I think that we will be able to send probes that far, just set and forget and then check back in a few hundred years, but manned interstellar travel seems improbable. Inter solar travel though is a different story and I do believe we will reach that beyond just a trip to the moon some day.

We get it. This topic goes way over your head. It's okay. You aren't being forced to click on threads like this.

well, since time in fact, moves more slowly as velocity increases, if we can come up with a spaceship that travels at nearly the speed of light, time will actually pass much more slowly for the astronauts making such a trip at least conceivable....

and yes, time does in fact pass more slowly at high velocities than when stationary....if you want to read about it, look up "time dilation"...blew my mind the first time I heard about it...

A 10 milligram particle striking a spaceship travelling at 10% speed of light would equal the kinetic energy of 100 kilograms of TNT. A typical rain drop weighs 200 milligrams.

The Oort Cloud is full of debris that may extend out 1 to 3 light years past the solar system.

Interstellar travel is probably a long ways off.

that is actually a pretty interesting point...and one that I haven't thought of...

Interstellar- as soon as we figure out cryogenic re animation, ion drives, and protection from cosmic rays. Or people could reproduce generation after generation abord a ship for centuries. So a few hundred years.
Intergalactic- as soon as we master wormholes. So several thousands of years.

Speaking of, I always get a kick out of sci-fi movies where humans somehow manage to outsmart the aliens that traveled to earth from the middle of nowhere. If they had the ability to make it this far, we'd be like fricking monkeys to them.

Interstellar travel with a return trip? Never, maybe.

One way trips? Soon.

Even if we figure out how to do it, there are many more logistical problems than this. First off we couldn't communicate with the probe or people who went through it. Secondly we couldn't even produce the amount of energy necessary to do it. Only a Type 2 civilization would be capable of producing the amount of energy to do this.

Necessity via war (or fear of it) allowed humans to go from no flight to landing on the moon in six decades. If we kept putting that much effort and that many resources into the space program there is no telling how far we'd come.

I'm not saying we'd be anywhere close to going outside of the solar system but I think the progress would have been incredible.
