For reference Azaria was born in Queens, New York City, the son of Sephardic Jewish parents, Ruth (Altcheck) and Albert Azaria. His grandparents on both sides hailed from Thessaloniki, Greece's Spanish Jewish community established there after the 1492 exile from Spain. Also heterosexual.
Hank Azaria is a very funny man and a talented voice actor. Him bowing to the twitter mob is a fricking disgrace.

What I don't get is that they never make Apu out to be dumb or bad, he's always a very likable character, they actually flirt with the plights of Indian immigrants and custom/culture clashes in a sensitive and funny way in at least one episode they dedicated to him where he is getting married. There are much more offensive things in the show than Apu.
Also this story is a few months old, the show already announced Apu would no longer be a character. This Azaria quote is superfluous.
