Best case, will be October. We will not be able to start until the virus is clear. Could even be January 2021.

The virus is never going to be clear. Even when we have a vaccine, the virus will still be around.

One of my cousins is in public school in Texas and she gets an assignment from her elementary level teacher every Monday online. It takes all of 30 minutes to finish the assignment. And that's it for the week.

It's probably just an enrichment activity and not for a grade. Most districts have stopped giving grades during this period

Do teachers not pay taxes themselves?

I am uncertain why my initial thoughts drew such consternation and opposition.

Should a teacher who is doing no teaching and simply uploads an assignment sheet consisting of thirty minutes of work be credited with and paid for working a 40 hour/week job?

If the teacher is not actively communicating and teaching through some virtual application, why is the teacher not furloughed? Why should the teacher be paid for not working?

For the teachers who are actually giving face time instruction to their students 30+ hours a week, I applaud you. However, in my own family's situation, this is not happening. Teachers who are taking advantage of this situation to give out trivial assignments and doing no teaching should be ashamed.

TulaneLSU, you're the kind of person who should be setting instruction guidelines for charter schools. I could see you at the helm of a classical academy.

Jan 3, 2021 is when most schools across the country will allow students back.

Furlough teachers. We all then file for unemployment and make more than we normally make. You act as if we have some control over this and are just choosing to do what we’ve been told to do.

How do you know what’s really going on? Why even comment on something you know NOTHING about? You’re not the teacher, you don’t know how many students are actually turning in the work, and how many students don’t even have online access. You’re commenting about something you have no first hand knowledge of and haven’t had anything to do with school since you were in high school.
I used to teach and a lot of my students didn’t have online access or home computers and didn’t turn in homework during a regular school year!

If teachers do not go back in August, this will most likely be the case. Most public school teachers will get a raise from unemployment though

Like I said, I speak only from my cousin's experience.

She has access to a computer with internet. Her teacher has access to an online facetime application that allows teaching face to face. (For those who don't, why not be creative and start a YouTube channel to give lectures with assignments?) My cousin always turns in assignments -- because students do not is not an excuse for teachers not to give assignments or teach.

And yet, my cousin is receiving no instructional videos. No tutoring from the teachers, even though this is sort of tutoring is easily facilitated in this day with our technology. People can come up with excuses all they want. But guess what -- I'm not getting paid, yet I still find three hours each day to devote to her instruction. It's far more than her teacher is doing.
