After the civil war when that bastard Lincoln sent his carpetbaggers down here to force assimilation and destroy our culture.

My Cajun father in law's mother refused to teach it to him. He also said his elementary school in Marksville would paddle any kid caught speaking Cajun French

Government:
Removes French to make everyone speak English, later forces everything to be translated to Spanish to include immigrants. Makes sense. Kill the culture that doesn't benefit you.

Several schools in New Orleans teach French. Not sure what you're talking about.

I live and work in the area, and I only hear it occasionally. It's always from old people.

When Long started building schools, the teachers that were brought here were mostly from up North or they did not speak French. So they kids were beaten if they spoke French in front of the teachers, etc. The children had to try very hard to learn English and then go home and speak all French. It was not easy for most of that generation. Most were also the first to go to school in their family, so those that didn't go to school didn't learn English- as someone mentioned-Creating a "stigma" aboutFrench speakers.

Also, Cajun French is a stagnant language, it hasn't evolved since the expulsion, so many of the wording today would be English. That is why many of the immersion teachers are from Belgium, where French is not the same as from France, but they do have French words for many modern things.

As someone said, they are trying to save it, but it was not handed down from the Children born in the 40 and 50's so their children were not taught it to spare them punishment and embarrassment. There are two generations without being taught it. Some were, but only very small pockets and most of them or their parents did not go to school past a certain age.

Public schools physically beat the French language out of louisiana children starting around the 1930s.

Yep, this was the case with my grandfather who was born in 1932.

dad's first language is French and he was the one who encouraged me to take Spanish in high school. Its much more practical today.

Because he was shamed as a kid.

As someone who has made efforts to learn and document, the shaming left a lot of old people believing no one wants to hear their "dirty" french.

Killing such an amazing culture was evil.

My mom spoke French before English. Growing up she refused to teach it to us. Anytime we even showed a hint of an "accent" she would flip. I asked her about it a few years ago & she said when she was in junior high & high school it was a "thing" that only "stupid" Cajuns spoke French and they would never get a good job. She didn't want us to have to go through something that, in the end, really didn't exist.

I'm fluent in French I can speak some Spanish and Italian. Now I can read it but I can't understand a lot of central and South Americans when they speak Spanish.

I've had an easier time hearing spaniards converse
