Also I'm not making a class warfare argument. Most lawyers could not run their own firm also.

*ETA: let me clarify. Most lawyers couldn't run their own firm and net $100k without public money

Do you not think there's a reason only a certain class of people go into these jobs? It's not all just social constructs. Truck drivers have a shite ton of health issues.

You may be right. I admittedly do not know.

The reason you may be right is that he tries to find people to hand over business he cannot take and they always screw it up or don't even respond.

That's the issue.

In these skilled trades where you can make a lot, you often get guys who go nuts because of all that money.

Some construction trades, those dudes are problem solvers deluxe. I did project mgmt, detailing and estimating at one time, you always go to the dudes in the field to get information. They know shite, and they figure shite out.

As for assembly line personnel, I got nothing. They do shite I wouldn't do though unless necessary. The boredom..

My plumber has a bang up and growing plumbing contracting and now HVAC business. He likely doesn’t feel he is looked down upon.

Random thought…

How many times have you thought about how important it is to have garbage men?

Imagine our world without them.

How much do you think they make? They aren't paid like they're that important.

We have a national holiday today because of events that unfolded surrounding a garbage worker strike

Turnaround work and operations in the plants do way better than alot of four year bachelor degree careers.

A lot better in regards to income, or quality of life? I feel like a lot of people focus solely on income when comparing blue collar and white collar jobs. Yes, someone in operations may be making 150k, but they are working 12-14 hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and are essentially at the will of their employer. Maybe that's worth it to some people, maybe it's not. But it should all be taken into account.

More educated and wealthier social classes have looked down on laborers since the dawn of human society.

Yea an 18 y/o starting out isn’t gonna make $100k typically, in Louisiana. Most I know after 5-6 years getting all their licenses and certifications typically make pretty close. My nephew is 19 and works HVAC and made $80k last year

The only ones who look down on it are the liberal arts, liberal, book intellectual types. These are the type of people who are too smart for their own good and lack everyday common sense knowledge.

Yep. These are the type of people that can’t change a light bulb without calling an electrician. And despite the fact that they have absolutely zero value to society in a practical sense, they will look down on retail workers, plumbers, construction workers etc and think they are better than those people.

Nah 30-40% of control room jobs aren’t in the LA and SETX. Just think of how many power plants there are in the US to power the grid for 350 million people.

I make my own schedule, but if given the choice between 5 days per week 9-5 or 3.5 days per week 5-5, I’d take the latter most likely

The guys who built the pyramids in ancient Egypt were rewarded with beer from the pharaoh.
So there’s that.

Yep, when I worked the outage circuit I put in a minimum of 84 hrs/week while I was working. But as to quality of life, I took off about 5 months/year and still had more $$$ than my college neighbors.

Good point though. I have engineers, on this very job, complaining about working more than 40, yet not getting paid for it. That has never, ever happened to me. Blue collar, white collar...it doesn't matter. We are all beholden to our employer. At least I get paid for it.
