Growing up we had really long (and painful!) orange text segments with those pink/red tongues to connect them. Also we had all these plastic screw doodads to attach the track to windowsills or railings.

Now the track segments are half as long and have a little hole at each end that locks the connectors. Also hard to find just track and not predesigned kits. Kinda like Legos these days.. We had to use our imagination in the old days and not follow kit instructions.

Anyway, bought about 200' of track and dad and little CAD are building a track that will start on the hill behind the house.

Subtle 'CAD has a kid' brag.

Building what they designed was never fun

Do they still have constructs

I had an oval track that I got from my cousin and I wore that shite out. Loved that shite back in the day.

And on the LEGO note: that shite is WAY too complicated these days. I did a helicopter with my son for Christmas and there were like almost 200 steps to it. It was ridiculous. Maybe I just am misremembering but I don’t ever remember it being that intricate and difficult back in the day.

Check your local dollar tree or dollar general they sell just the track for, yep you guessed it, a dollar.

Albertsons also sells the cars for a buck, my kid has collected tons of them

ETA: you may have trouble finding curved track but they always have the straights, loops, jumps and manual shooters.

They weren't. They're way more complex these days, and way more expensive. They also look much more realistic with many more small pieces.

No more orange. The set I bought for my grandson last year was a turquoise/teal color.

My folks were poor when I was a little kid.
My race track and cars were all Johnny Lightning.
It's still traumatic.

It's when they started having a "set" for everything with perfect, pre-made parts. (As opposed to a big pile of modular pieces where you had to use your imagination).

I remember the old Mongoose and Snake Hot Wheels set. That was in the 1969s. Came with those cars and specialized parts.

I had both the navy blue “Mongoose” and white “Snake” cars. I wonder what those are worth today.

I remember the old Mongoose and Snake Hot Wheels set. That was in the 1960s and even then it came with those cars and lots of specialized parts. Clamps, track sections, winner flag station, drag chute ramps...

Sidewalls are lower and cars come off easier.

There are no more manual launchers sold single at dollar stores. Discontinued.

Had to buy a pair off ebay recently.

The launcher I had in the 70’s used two, horizontal spinning wheels like a pitching machine, and it indeed friggin launched.

Was it a technic set? Those have always been more complex with more steps. Just a more intricate build.

I loved the castle and space sets from the 90s. Have most of that line in bins in a shed somewhere. Well, the space at least.

Wish I had the castle and pirate lines

Sounds like someone else has been spanked as a child with a segment of a Hot Wheels track

It’s been a long time. I remember having to buy kits when my son was younger but it was fun to use different kit parts to assemble our own tracks.

My mom found a section of old hot wheels track sufficient for spanking us, when nothing else was in reach.
