You sure it's gypsies and not the dalits from south of the border. They look alike and act alike and they are moving further east and north.

Mayberry had issues in 1966. Andy handled it.

2000 were apprehended at the border in 2021. Per a news article I found, can’t find anything newer. I would guess more have come in this year.

I have been wondering about this too.

They are around San Antonio now too, doing their panhandling schtick. I have a friend from Europe and he is cracking up that of all places they are now in San Antonio. Gypsys are a big problem in Europe.

What exactly is a gypsy? Always thought of the people who ran those road carnivals as gypsies, but now that I think about it, they were clearly OSHA professionals.

They were Indian people that wondered into Europe many centuries ago. They have kept their own culture and traditions all this time, and have been long discriminated against in Europe. They like to con people and panhandle rather than work an honest living. Probably commit more crime than average.

Sound familiar?

They are pretty much found all over Europe. It’s hilarious if they become a bigger thing in America.

As progressive as we think of Europe as, they really hate gypsys.

Worked in a grocery store as a kid. Once a bunch of gypsies came in. The manager locked the doors and called the cops. Police didn't let them leave without searching them. Manager said they wouldn't sue him because they wouldn't stay in the same are long enough to sue.

Thieves and hustlers. Some of the local ones work in the asphalt paving business. Some in roofing. The owner of one local industrial construction company is part of a family of gypsies. Runs his business like it too.

Romania was basically named after the Romani people (gypsies). They officially comprise of less than 5% of their current population, but no one knows for sure because they live outside of official government registries and laws. Their totals could be closer to 10-15% of the population.

They don’t like to be counted in the census, and they travel a lot, so they often don’t have official addresses. No one knows how many are currently in and around Romania.

They’ve been in Europe for centuries, but have traditionally been concentrated in Eastern Europe. However, they’ve quickly migrated throughout the rest of the continent after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Romania was named after the Romans. There are a ton of "Roma" people in Romania but the two groups should never be conflated.

Where in New Orleans have you seen gypsies? I see the regular beggars in the canal st/canal blvd /Delgado area. But, those are druggies.

In houston they are the guys doing the whobbly wheel scam, fix dents in your car(scam), and selling "overstock" out of vans.

Here's an interesting video of a community of them in south memphis

I screwed up the origin. Yes, Romania is derived from Rome and Romans. The Romani people are named after the country.

Gypsies adopted the name “Romani” in the 20th century to distance themselves from all the negative stereotypes and negative history associated with the term “gypsy”. They chose Romani in part because they were concentrated in and around Romania.

First few times I went to France, there were gypsies everywhere in the larger cities. Last time I went, there wasn’t a fricking gypsie anywhere. I was disinclined to ask where they all went
