I am worth more than a few paid months off to my employer.

Absolutely laughable. I guess your wife didn’t have to have a c section? Or pre eclampsia? Shut the hell up

Business owner here. I give my employees 6 months paid, for both maternity and paternity. VERY interestingly, most don’t take the full time but I HEAVILY encourage it. Is it hard on us at the time? Hell yes. But I remember that time in our lives and how tough it was.

I take that stance firmly as someone who had zero paternity leave for our first little one. That burned me. Bad….And made me realize corporations really don’t give a frick about you.

My wife had a complicated birth and they were poking and prodding about coming back after 6 weeks. I think a week or two of paid paternity leave is more than generous but there needs to be more offered for paid maternity leave. We aren’t talking about welfare queens here. We want the right people having more kids and the system sure as hell doesn’t incentivize it at all.

Why the frick should I care more about a company than my wife and newborn child?
This must be a spinoff of the shitty dad thread

After our second child we thought it was best that my wife stay home for a few years with the kids. I travel a lot for work so it’s worked out pretty well. I only took a week off for “paternity leave.” I think it’s very important for moms to be home during the formative years vs daycare all day. It’s sad that it’s become so hard for families to be able to do so.

No doubt. Some of these dumbasses spend more time off work for a hunting trip than they do for the birth of their child.

Not why they do it. Their competitors offer it. If they don't, they will lose out on top talent.

You do what you have to, to hire and keep top talent.

My friend recently had a baby. It was really tough on his body and he was glad to get a few months off work.

It is a wonderful thing.

It is. As a country it is a cost that must be paid. If not you just have low IQ pool having children and your high skilled population stagnates.

Are you a father? Because you wouldn’t be saying this (or you’re a complete dumbass).

I took a week off to get settled in and let my wife heal properly. Get our routine down. I go back to work tomorrow morning.

This is what most men do. 1, maybe 2 weeks.

It's do-gooder crap legislation like this that causes small businesses to shut down and nobody gets paid.

Federal employees ( mother and father) get 12 weeks paid leave to use within a year of birth. It doesn’t count against your regular annual or sick leave. The law passed after I had my kids. It’s nice for the employee, but it puts your department in a bad spot, if it’s small.

It's a necessary benefit in most industries now. I support educated, white collar employees having children, so I'm for it.

Some companies do offer crazy amounts of leave, but that's better than no leave.

I think the dad’s getting 8 weeks is ridiculous, and taking it through the year like vacation, not just when the baby is born.

It should be available to mothers and fathers for at least a few months. We talk all of the time on here about how good people aren't having enough children. This is one of a long list of things that would support people having families.

Paid leave for having children should be the most bipartisan, well funded, federal program of all time.

6 weeks for dads, 6 months for moms.
Work it out with employers any which way, but it needs to happen.

Scandinavians get this right.
