52k a year.

I make about that and it has allowed me to pay off my credit debt, buy a decent vehicle, and fish and hunt as much as i want. I don't have kids so that helps.

I don't know if it's truly a struggle, but I can certainly see how 170k in a major city (especially w/ private school) could be pretty challenging w/ 4 kids.

Obviously we're not talking about survival

Unless you're single with no dependents, 110k is pretty limiting in any of those cities.

I mean, OP gave no details, but a single guy making $110k could live almost wherever he wanted in Dallas.

If he's married, his wife is likely working too, but even a household income of $110k is perfectly livable in Dallas.

No I am living good. Don't get me wrong. But 250k with 4 kids would make it so much easier.

Saw a guy on Tv yesterday state that the ideal salary for most was 52k a year. That allowed you to enjoy your life to the fullest. After that quality of life went down.

I could not disagree more. I need way more money than that to live life like a I want to live it.

I don't want to sound like an a-hole, but I'm not sure how you live in good areas of Dallas proper with a family for that.

You could buy a super nice townhouse in highland Park for that, or a 3000 SQ foot house in North Dallas with a pool. But it's not enough to make it in the big ole city baw, only in LP. I sincerely hope these guys have just never lived anywhere else and are just ignorant because that's seriously one of the stupidest takes on this site.

Find me a "super nice townhouse in highland park" for a family to live in on 110k.

I actually have a pretty solid work life balance honestly.

Supposed to work 40 hours per week with ever other Friday off. Probably in the office 35. Work is extremely low stress. Great salary for the amount of work I do. 3 weeks of vacation. While I would like more, the 9/80 schedule gives numerous 4 day weekends and a few 3 day work weeks theoughout the year.

I would like more extended time off, but unless you’re a teacher or work a rotational schedule, that’s hardly an option in the U.S, so this is a good alternative.

The real problem, though, is that I get bored at work, and sometimes I wonder if I’d prefer a job where I worked harder and had to hustle more, if even for similar pay.

Eh, I looked, you may strech it thin or it may not be "that nice" but you can get 2br/2ba in HP for less than 300k. I may have stretched a bit, but the overall point remains.

Defines like 90% of Dallas north of I30.

No, you aren't taking your family of 4 into Preston hollow on $110k, but north Dallas is plenty affordable on that household income.

Well I currently make $30k, so anything above that would be nice right now.

My point is that living in a top part of any major city, even ones not thought to be all that costly (dallas, houston, etc.) is expensive. It's expensive just to live there (buy a house) much less live the lifestyle of everyone else there.

If you're in a place like Atlanta or Houston, where you may well have to use private schools, you can add 50k a year to that expenditure easily.

I agree that the idea you can't live anywhere on _____ is overplayed, but we're talking about balance here, not merely breaking even in a given area.

People with kids pretty much do. At least in Manhattan.
