I thought I could play chess until I went to jail. Try competing with guys that play 10 hours a day for years at a time.

Yikes no thank you. I get so bored when people take longer than a few seconds to move. I only play 3 mins.

I’m gonna hit you up, seriously. Just busy shopping today and trying to get my yard cleaned up so I can hunt this weekend.

I've played off and on since my Dad taught me as a kid.
What's the best way to learn to be a really good chess player? Any particular online resources available for recommendation?

I have 2 chess boards at home and me and my old roommate played all the time, and sometimes friends. I would win more often than not but I cant really say either of us were on a very high skill level so that's not saying much. Chess has always intrigued me but I never got serious with it.
The only theory I've actually bothered to look up was openings. I cant remember any of the specific stuff but I do remember trying to gain control of the middle, developing bishops/knights into active squares, and castling.
Maybe I'll try to get into it more seriously as a new years resolution. Is chess.com the best site?

Well yes, obviously. I mainly play the Vienna Game (on white) and the Sicilian Defense (on black). I like open games. I try to employ "New Dynamism" concepts.
This is relatively easier with the Vienna Game, which is a classic opening but has fallen out of favor. It generally keeps the opponent off balance with some different-looking fronts and interesting tactical scenarios. Added advantage: not everybody knows it. Maybe they know the first two moves, but they don't know it as a system.
The Sicilian is more difficult, primarily because everybody knows it and everybody uses it. In fact, it is one of the most popular black openings there is. But I throw in some "off-beat" positions to keep the opponent guessing. This is the core idea of New Dynamism. For example, I like to play the Sicilian with a queenside financetto. Technically vulnerable, if you know how to attack it. But most people don't, and they are thrown off by the Hypermodern look obtained from controlling the long white diagonal.
Happy to elaborate. I know other openings, but those are my go-to systems.

Learn some openings, use tactics trainers, and play a lot of online chess. The more the better.

Hover around 850. I use it to waste time. I was doing much better when the lessons on chess.com app were free and I could learn more about improving.
