They are great if you plan on getting a new one every two years. They don’t last long after 2 years
That’s what my mother and her husband do. If it needs any repair they just trade it in for a new one.

I will not have any inheritance soon.

This is such a thread on who has fixed something on a vehicle and who hasn't
It's like the ultimate troll car topic

If they don’t do the usual 2 year swap, I imagine most BMW owners rely heavily on the dealership for repairs - which sorta makes sense because BMW owners love getting fricked in the arse.
It’s cost prohibitive to work on older BMWs (parts), but it’s damn near impossible to fix anything yourself on most BMWs after about the E90 generation. Hell I think they stop putting oil dipsticks in some models at that point.

I guess you're not familiar with the M line of BMW's. It has a 520hp V8 engine.

BMWs ain’t what they used to be.

Actually the common, more generic, older BMW's are pretty cheap to get parts for. E30/E36/E46 are cheap for the common parts. Which is good as they will need a lot of them generally. Figure an entire cooling system on an E46 by 75k as an example.
Now if you're talking about valve seals on 640, or anything V12, yeah open the wallet.

My best friend drives the M340i and I think it is really nice
It is leased, so I don't think long term repairs are really a concern of his.

A twin turbo v8 that only makes 520 and has been subject to mass recalls despite being on production for nearly 10 years. Impressive.

I’ve got a 21 X5M and love it.
I wouldn't hesitate to get a slightly older X5, they seem to be the best built out of the BMW lineup. There's a reason you see a shite ton of them 10+ years old still running around everywhere.
The rest of the lineup is nice and they're quality built cars with great performance, until you hit about 60-80k miles. Then they fall apart and have weird, uncommon issues

Where, Germany?
I see more 10 year old Kias humming along than I do European makes except Porsche.

Taxis being USA-"luxury" vehicles is always an interesting sight when overseas

Start looking at older BMWs still on the road, and they're either X5s or 325i. I see them everywhere, particularly in the hood

Maybe it's just a Florida thing, but there's TONS of 10+ year old X5s running around

At one time the brand was kickass cool. They called it "the ultimate driving machine" and they weren't kidding. The McLaren F1 had a BMW engine. The E36 M3 was awarded "best handling car" over the Vette, Supra, and 3000GT in 1997. The E39 M5 was just slick. Car and Driver once called the E39 540i Sport "the best all around car".
Now you can get a small, medium, or large "suv" that is basically just a giant hatchback wagon because buyers "feel good about sitting up high" and "I need an SUV" and "SUV's are safer" (total bullshite). Take the logo and double-kidney grill off and it doesn't look much different than a Chevy Equinox.

I loved my 2003 540i sport but once I no longer had the time to do most of the repairs myself I got rid of it.

Where does your friend live? Because I was behind that exact car pulling into my neighborhood this evening. As soon as I saw it, I thought, "That ain't cheap."

Mercedes are better. Though people will still complain about the costs.

I’ve only had one, a 5 series, best car I’ve ever had.
