I bought one last year on prime day for like $150ish. It’s very basic, no gps or controlling with phone or anything other than off/ on. But it’s great. We have a golden retriever that sheds and kids so we run it a couple times a week in our living room/ kitchen. Fills up the little bin every 15-20 minutes so you have to empty it routinely.

Because an Echo Dot listens in and they advertise accordingly. You can also make purchases with Alexa very easily. I'm not a big fan of Alexa, yes it's neat and kids love it, but it's one big advertisement machine. I ended up getting an Apple Homepod. More expensive, but it's more of a music speaker, and Siri doesn't flood you with ads or ask you if you want to purchase something.

I'm surprised those Amazon reorder button dongle things are still around, but people obviously use them. If Amazon is giving dot's away I bet they have data that people with them order more stuff. I use Alexa to add stuff to my shopping list all the time. I go down to the store and buy those things on my list in person but someone younger might just tell Alexa to order it and ship it.

I will disagree on being pointless. You can take steps on all devices to help prevent eavesdropping. Phones, computers, etc.
It is just an option for people that might care, there is really no reason to crap on it.

I would venture it also has to do with the fact that people who have an echo are probably more likely to also purchase things like home automation devices- lights, plugs, etc. More echos in homes creates more opportunities to sell a class of product that that Mahoney might not otherwise purchase.

It’s the same as Facebook. It has been proven that if you have the Facebook app, it records all sounds that comes through your microphone. Even if you delete the app. That’s why you get ads for things you have never search but have said around your phone. These home do everything tools are the same way.
There is a reason that in private meetings in high levels of government and the military phones are required to stay out of the room. Everything is being recorded that is in hearing distance of a microphone.
