What's the point of an autopsy when the cause of death is well known (e.g. gun shot wound, cancer)?

Because that self-inflicted gunshot story doesn’t hold up when the doc discovers blunt force trama to the head. You need to watch Dateline.

Because someone could easily frame someone else unless the exact cause is known.
Example: A guy strangles someone and then shoots the body with someone else's gun with fingerprints on it.

Are people dying of cancer and getting autopsies?
A gun shot victim could've been poisoned, shot happened after he was dead, etc. It's not always obvious.

When I was 16 I assisted with 4 autopsies. One was a girl who had shot herself in the head. But, one was a guy who had fallen off a barge in the MS river. They thought he had drowned but he actually died from an aneurysm. It was very interesting. I got to sew him back up.
