1. To identify the exact cause of death (in case) there are questions that arise later. lawsuits, crimes, insurance payouts etc.

2. To advance science. (especially for cancer victims) It help to know as much as possible about the damage done by the cancer.

3. To point out the size of the guys penis and be amazed or laugh. (Now watch the OP have to sleep with that thought in his head)

A close friend's BIL passed away suddenly from a heart attack (?). During a conversation about his death I asked if there was going to be an autopsy and my friend got real mad. I always thought that was very strange.

What's the point of an autopsy when the cause of death is well known (e.g. gun shot wound, cancer)?

What if the gunshot wound wasn't the actual cause of death even if it appears that way?

Also, they can gain other info from that like the angle the gun was fired, possibly the distance from the person, etc. In a lot of cases it probably doesn't matter but in others it can.

Are people dying of cancer and getting autopsies

All the time. Sometimes doctors want to see the effects a particular treatment had on the body. For instance, it could lead to liver or kidney failure or the patient could have a massive pulmonary embolism.

Also, just because the patient had terminal cancer, that doesn’t mean that’s what killed them. Some patients commit suicide, even in the hospital with pain medication.

There are a lot of reasons to do them.

Several decades ago, when my Grandfather died at 89, the hospital asked that he be autopsied as they had to have so many autopsies done each year for their accreditation.

Turned out he died from a femoral artery aneurysm and not the aorta aneurysm he had been diagnosed with fifteen years earlier.

Even if he did die from the gunshot wound, they need to do analysis. Maybe they thought he committed suicide. Maybe the angle of the entry and exit wound make that impossible.

While driving to work today, I listened a segment on NPR ( ) of the Galveston coroner working overnight and through the weekend to perform autopsies on the victims of the Santa Fe shooting. I just thought, what was the point? They already know, I suppose, the cause of death.
