I have one.
It's great. My golf clubs are back. A yeti full of beer and my fishing gear. I can go have fun whenever I want. Plus if you have dirty muddy stinky gear it's not in the cabin with you like in an suv

Why not use the truck the way it's intended to be used and pull a camper? I don't get truck bed campers either

Because you can take that camper off and use the bed for shite that you wouldn’t want in an SUV. or, you can use the camper to for things like say......camping.

The name "camper" implies something here.
In short, going camping as a kid. Dad put his shitty kids in the tents, and him and moms slept in back of truck/in the camper.

I put one on my Tacoma about 6 months ago. I must admit, I like the look of the truck better without it.
But it's so damn convenient to have all that covered and secure cargo space. I can put both my bike, and my wife's bike back there (that's over 10k worth of carbon fiber awesomeness) and they are protected from the elements and pretty discouraging to frickhead thieves.
It's also where my two golden retrievers ride now. They love the extra space, I open the sliding window between the cab and the camper so they can stick their heads through and check in on us, and there's a LOT less dog hair in the cab since they starting riding back there.
This one came with cargo rack cross bars on top so I can carry my kayak up there.
I took about 5 months of looking to find one used, so it only cost me $400.
I rigged up a rope and pulley system on the ceiling of my garage so I can take it off and store it out of the way of everything.
You lose.

I have a thule rack system on mine. It's awesome. I just leave the kayak up there for weeks sometimes.

I bought a truck with one. I said I was going to remove it the day I got it. I never did.
