Scythians. So dominant in their time, they’d be cited by the Bible and Shakespeare as a blanket description for “barbarian”.

Blonde caucasians that adopted the stirrup, and dominated the steppe. Descendants of several modern cultures, ranging from the Picts and Celts of Scotland and Ireland, all the way to the Rus of Russia claim to be from Scythian roots

I visited the Minoan civilization, and it was pretty mind boggling, especially for since it was run by bitches at one point. The More You Know.

Eta: I posted that without reading the thread. Funny. Definitely worth a visit. Crete is a bizarre magical place. Drove the entire island. Deceptively large esp w mountain roads.

Romans for longevity. They however borrowed from the Greeks who themselves borrowed from the Egyptians. We are closer in time to Julius Caesar than he was to the building of the pyramids. However the be always been interested in pre imdoeuropean cultures like the Vinca who had a fairly advanced society in the pre history era.

The Mongols where a fierce yet divided tribal people on the fringes of China before a penniless teenage outcast proceeded to unite them and turn them into the largest land empire in history.

The Assyrians were brutal

Recommend Dan Carlin’s King of Kings

You get Assyrians, Persians, Greeks

Punic Nightmare is great for Carthage and Rome

As is Death Throes of the Republic
