In our everyday cars I change the oil when the car tells me to (usually between 10k and 12k), with my travel car I change it every 12-15k. I use Mobil One in the travel car and it currently has 390K miles on it. I have done a couple of oil analysis on it with ~12k on the oil and it looked good for several thousand more miles.
Anyone that changes their oil in a modern vehicle not used for towing or track days @3K is just wasting money.

The shop says 3 months or 3,000 miles because that's a pretty good interval to have a car at least laid eyes on by a mechanic for the average owner
this was true probably 15-20 years ago but today? that's pretty soon/close
my manual says 7500 miles but the dealership says 6k, fwiw

I have a friend who bought a new Corvette and went to the factory to see it come off the assembly line. While there he got into a conversation with a GM rep who told him if you change the oil more often than the car tells you to, you're throwing money away.
I usually change mine when the "Oil Life" gets down to 20-25%, which is generally 9-10,000 miles.
I do use good oil and a good filter though.

Every 5,000 miles. I take it to Walmart and watch them the entire time, and they always do a good job. I get either M1 or Pennzoil Platinum. I pay a little extra and have them substitute the Fram filter for a Mobile filter though I got the K&N filter last time. With new RainX wiper blades and free tire rotation, it was 63 bucks with tax, hard to beat.

Hell I go 4-5,000 miles many times and I use regular ole non synthetic oil

My owners manual says 10k and that’s what I do.

$30 is pretty cheap insurance to keep a vehicle running hundreds of thousands of miles
I change mine every 5000

3000/3 months is a worst case scenario guideline for the driver that may have no idea how to diagnose issues themselves. I'm not saying it's necessary for most vehicles or owners, but it's not a bad idea for the middle aged lady who sits in BR traffic for 50 mins a day in July idling at 97 degrees and has no idea how to check the level. It's just not the money making scheme people make it out to be. No one's twisting your arm. I'm sitting at 15K on one of my vehicles right now and will probably go another 5K before changing, but I know exactly what I put in it, where the level is, and how I drove it.

If your vehicle is less than 5 years old there’s a good chance the manufacturer recommended interval is 7500 to 10k miles between oil changes.

I had a gmc that I traded some time back that had 330k on it when I traded it in. Routinely went 25-30k miles between oil changes with regular old Castrol 10w30. Never a tick or problem.
Most manufacturers are recommending 7-10k, and you frickers are buying into the service manager telling you 3k.
No shite they are telling you 10k. They make more money when you bring your vehicle in for 3X the needed oil changes.

Nope, you need to look up what a bypass filter is, I'll help you out. Notice how many miles the oil/filter change interval is.

I change mine every 5k. I may have gone 6-7k a few times. I just use regular oil.

You guys jealous that I've had only one oil change in two years while driving only 3,000 miles? Before I retired I was putting 27,000 miles a year on my truck getting to work and back home. I did this for 12 years. I've done enough driving to last me a lifetime
My wife's car takes synthetic and she drives like 4-5k per year. I usually change it every other year

Every 5000 with synthetic but I get the tires rotated which is more important at that interval. It’s just easy to do both.

Why pay for synthetic at that interval? Regular oil will easily last 5k

I went 30k on an old many truck years ago but that was because it leaked oil and I just kept adding new. Nowadays, I change every 5k on the odometer because it's really easy to remember.

I don’t think I changed my oil once while I was in college so 5 years
