Howard Johnson Sniper in New Orleans

My dad was La National Guard in Baton Rouge at the time. He was activated and had to rush down to secure the perimeter for standoff with Mark Essex(the HoJo Sniper).
quote:

Mark James Robert Essex was an American serial sniper and black nationalist who killed a total of nine people, including five policemen, and wounded 13 others in New Orleans on December 31, 1972 and January 7, 1973. He was killed in the second armed confrontation

Not really CSB but a morbid sidenote: My dad went on to be a Master Sergeant in La National Guard in Baton Rouge by the late 70s. He trained John Muhammad during his time in Baton Rouge as a combat engineer.
My dad said "Williams"(as he called him) was incredibly smart and physically fit(he smoked everyone in PT and could run 3 miles in under 15 minutes).

OKC bombing was around Easter when I was a kid

4/20/95

Only reason I remember now is because Columbine, Hitler's bday, ex girlfriends bday, and of course 420 are all April 20.

I hate to be that guy but the OKC bombing was on 4/19/95. My daughter was born 4/20/95 so I remember it like yesterday.

Hurricane Betsy. Waded out of the flood to St. Roch park where my uncle was waiting for us. We spent a couple of days there.

I have memories of the Bicentennial celebrations and Elvis's death. The one news story that really stuck in my memory at the time was watching coverage of the Tenerife air disaster in the Canary Islands that killed almost 600 people.

Then a few months later the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash was on the news. For several months my 6/7 year old brain just knew that every plane that flew over was about to crash and burn!

Probably the gas shortage in the '70s but recalling any detail now is impossible.

Definitely remember Elvis' death being reported and seeing the procession when someone jumped in front of the hearse.

The Atlanta and Tylenol murders.

Was a Senior in high school when Challenger exploded.
