My Mom had a box of food and supplies in case we had to evacuate. I got punished for getting into the Hershey Silverbells.
That was some scary shite. Knowing we could get nuked.

Probably Nixon visiting China, Fischer beating Spassky, or maybe Apollo 16. I remember all 3 but without looking them up I am not sure which one came first.
The most vivid one I have from childhood was later with the announcement of the end of the Vietnam war I am not sure exactly which "end" it was but I was riding in the car with my mom. I remember being sad because I wanted to be a tanker in the Army and seemed to think my career path had dissolved with what I could only see as an end to all war.

Cronkite had a story on Vietnam almost every night but the first I specifically remember might be George Wallace getting shot.
After further reflection, I'd say the UT sniper. I remember Vietnam and Wallace being in the news a lot but I think the Whitman mass shooting was the first major news story I remember. I think I vaguely remember the Cuban missile crisis but that probably a false memory, I was so young.

Watergate. Pissed me off that the hearings preempted Gilligan’s Island after school.

Watching the Challenger explosion in Primary School, I also remember the Berlin Wall coming down. I didn’t understand the significance of the wall coming down at the time but from my dad’s reaction I knew something big was going on.

JFK being assassinated. I was only 4 but remember people crying and talking about it. Didn't understand what was going on until years later in school.

I remember watching the 1984 Reagan/Mondale election with my dad. He was a big fan of Reagan. I'd have been just slightly under age 7.
I remember a number of things before 1984 but not any major news events.

I vaguely remember people talking about the Iran hostages. I was only a couple years old and had no idea what it was, but there was this old couple my parents would take me over to spend the weekend with (it was like having a third set of grandparents, if anything I spent way more time with them than my grandparents). I remember the woman talking about the hostages. I don't remember what she said about them, I just remember her talking about them.
First one I really knew what was happening was the challenger explosion. We were watching it on tv in first grade as it happened.
