What’s the consensus on Zello?

Is it worth downloading or does it require working WiFi?

I’ll say yes to both?
Obviously will need to be able to connect to a network but has a better shot of connecting if things get squirrely

We tested it successfully so far, I guess the real test is when power and other crap goes down.

Need internet or cell service like everything else on your phone. Think women are spreading this on Facebook

There's always room for Zello

Works without wifi. Free so worth it. Not sure if it will help when cell service is spotty but might as well get it since it could be beneficial.

You can bet you arse that anything requiring above ground infrastructure at any point in the chain will be down at some point in the BR and NOLA areas. That means Cox, ATT, Verizon, all electrical, etc…..that means that during and some time after the storm Zello will be useless.
Now if you have a generator and work on the belief that Cox (and other terrestrial internet providers) will get their infrastructure back up before Verizon the it could be very useful…..but not in the short term.

Zello requires WiFi or cell service. In other words, if you can't use your phone already, Zello isn't going to help you.

Exactly, people are so stupid.

Text has the best chance of working when everything else starts failing.

Yep….text will be the last means of comm that you will be able to use most likely…..and the first one available after TSHTF

This is NOT the case for Non Iphone users. When you have the absolute shittiest cell signal, apps like Facebook far outpace other apps and sms as far as sending a message packet by packet until it goes through. I hate Zuck as much as anyone. But Gchat, text, snapchat, etc will simply fail and you will find yourself trying to resend messages and experiencing dropped messages.
Facebook Messenger does communications VERY well with their service as it will keep trying until it goes through even on 2g service(Zello brags about having this capability like no other data communication service has it). Disclaimer, Facebook will be stealing your first born every bit of data on your family when you use Messenger.

I'm a data nerd who has experienced this first hand and did NOT sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

It’s my understanding of Zello that it uses WiFi, but also works on all the other networks.
So if your network is down, another may be up and this will work.
It’s free, so it’s not a big risk.

It's a push-to-talk app? Man, I don't usually give Boomers a hard time, but that's Boomerier than Janis Joplin in white New Balances.

The push to talk feature for Zello does have it's place. You can join a 'channel for your area and in the event of serious shite hitting the fan you can send an sos message and your gps location to the entire channel. So you could hit the button and reach dozens of people instantly with "Hey MFers' we're about to drown" and they could respond.
That is handy and is why it's marketed to first responders(they obviously pay for a pro version).

I'm not against it. Just explaining that FB messenger is a GREAT tool to communicate in any part of the country with sporadic cell signal and no wifi.
Yellowstone Park for example. We were there in July and experienced this. It's not just after a disaster in a city.
