Currently have the blonde laminate wood floor in my house and hate it. Looking for something dark and more distressed looking. I've seen houses with the wood look but with a more "rubbery" feel almost.

What are some good alternatives to look at? Where are the best places to shop for flooring in BR?

They might have a tile product. Some of those products are getting really good. That being said there is nothing like real wood. It's really not that much more expensive.

If you want to save money buy the materials yourself and get the name of a qualified installed from the hardwood floor distributor (hint: not lumber liquidators).

I just put more flooring to match the original wood flooring in my home. It was a parade home when built, so it was some pretty expensive stuff.
The children's rooms had carpet while the rest of the home was th wood flooring.
It comes in the interlocking planks, but the top is real wood. Mine is "hand scraped pine" and ran me $6.39/ft (contractor price) on top of that I paid $2/ft installation and price of glue(about .50/ft)
This is some very nice stuff and is as tough as can be. It's interlocking and glued to the slab, so there is no movement feel or noise.
As it gets old and used, it's real and starts to show the dents and stuff that gives it more authentic looks, but can still be "screed" (lite sand and refinish) many years down the road if needed.
I recommend this type if product....makes home value rise, and in my case, married the additional rooms to the rest of the home.
But basically, my cost was $10/ft.....ouch! 1 room done, 2 more to go after holidays
Its is beautiful though...wish I knew how to share a pic

there are a ton of options for “wood” tile especially if you like a rustic or distressed look. Much easier to maintain than real wood and more durable.

Dark wood floors will show dirt. Don't do it.

Put down wood floors. Lot of options out there.

There is a video on YouTube by SSLfamilyguy where he takes sheets of 8x4 plywood sheets (must have one side extremely smooth) and he simply cut them into 8 inch strips and polyurethaned them and damn did it look good. I am seriously considering this as it is MUCH cheaper than traditional flooring.

If you are into renewable resources, bamboo flooring is an option. Bamboo looks like wood but is actually in the grass family and grows quickly.

Engineered hardwood is what I put down. If I knew how to upload a picture I could put a picture up.

The wood like tile has come a LONG way in recent years. It looks damn near identical to wood.

I’m all for sustainability but bamboo floors are awful. They scratch easily and buckle under the slightest bit of moisture.
