Lived in MN for 50 years, then IA for 12 years and moved to central AL 2 years ago.

Many more blacks here. Older ones are nice; younger ones are trashy.

By far the reason I moved here was the 6' snow drifts and cold up there. Fed horses in - 80 wind chill.

Can't do a lot outside when summer but other than that 50's days and 30's nights and once or twice a winter down to 10 or so.

The thing that shocked me the most is the illiteracy here. And almost everyone smokes/drinks.

The most weird thing about down here is a lot of the time you have to go north to go south due to the mountains. The highways up north are in grids.

it's not so nice looking from december-april though

The weather is a trade off. The summers are incredible. There's a reason there is so much great golf in Wisconsin and Michigan. Every time I go somewhere in the rural Midwest, especially the Upper Midwest, I am blown away by how well kept and nice things are.

The big leg up I think the rural South has over the rural Midwest is the topography. Not just in or near the Smokies, the rural South has mountains, hills, river valleys, gorges, you name it for hundreds and hundreds of miles. As a reference, the topography in northern Alabama (probably not typically thought of as a top tier destination area) absolutely blows away anything in the Midwest. The best topography the Midwest has is probably the western and northwestern parts of Michigan, especially along the Lake (Sleeping Bear Dunes and the like). Boundary Waters NP and the UP in Michigan are also good, but again, both pretty flat places. The South has the Appalachians, the Cumberland Plateau, the Bluegrass regions of central Kentucky and Tennessee, the Ozarks, the Low Country, on and on.

Midwestern people are more authentic, real.

You deal with a lot of silly cliques down South. People are overly impressed by perceived social status, so most you deal with a lot of pretentious people or people proud of being ghetto.
