Wonder if it’s related to the Lyondell leak from a few weeks back?

They all got a phone call and someone asked if their AC was running. They said yes and where told to go catch it, panic followed

What's the point of turning off your AC?
It doesn't bring in outside air.

Nope. I would rather die in comfort than be miserable before dying

I’m from La Porte. Leak at Lubrizol. Pretty common occurrence around those parts. We used to even have shelter in place drills in school.

This is like the third incident in Laporte in the last month or two. They need to get their shite order out there.

In many leaky houses the areas near the return can draw in outside air.

Also homes with leaky supply ducts in the attic will result in negative pressure on the conditioned space.

It's a pretty common recommendation for shelter in place situations for airborne contaminants.

Why don’t they just mask up?

It spreads whatever does get into the house everywhere in the house. In addition, air ALWAYS gets into a house. A ventilation system is going to create points in the ventilated volume that are lower in pressure than the outside air and will draw in contaminated air. Your house isn't airtight and that's the only reason your home AC doesn't have dedicated makeup air dampers. Your house and ventilation system has enough leaky surface area to allow entry of sufficient outside air for the volume of your home. The ventilation system's fan provides the power input to drive the pressure differential, so turning it off lets the house equalize to the exterior and reduces the amount of air that gets exchanged across the building's envelope.

Larger buildings have to have dedicated makeup air because they tend to be more airtight than your leaky house and do not have enough surface area to supply the building's fresh air needs through leaks.

This always blows my mind. How about you don’t put the kids in that close proximity of chemical plants. Put the schools on the other side of town.
