The conversation in the wash hand / clean your dick thread got me to thinking about the general consensus on how to attack germs.

OT, which of the following you believe in more?

1) Allow for mild exposure to germs to develop natural resistance to disease/illness.

2) Extreme germophobe and everything must be sanitized to the nth degree no matter what. This includes domicile and office setting. You also take 10 minutes to clean the office toilet before taking a shite.

3) Bubble Boy

You would think so but there are so many germaphobes on the planet nowadays that some basic infections are now becoming dangerous (not that they already weren't but even more so)

You need exposure at an early age so you can build up immunity. Then you can be clean later in life and not worry about being allergic to water.

It basically just sets you up for not being constantly sick as an adult when you do become exposed to various forms of bacteria. Your body has already seen it and your immune system knows how to respond.

Easily this.

And not mild exposure either, I like massive exposure. Its why nurses and school teachers have such fantastic immune systems.

I also don't take antibiotics unless the situation is dire and don't overuse hand sanitizer.

Furthermore, we are expecting our first child and I can't wait to let him eat dirt like my mom did and then hose him off.

This helicopter parents that don't let their kids interact with germs are fricking nuts. Their kids are going to be sickly their whole lives.

Really the only people that should be worried is people who were fed formula as babies. Those kids are always so weak

This

As you age you become a more aware of germs as the common cold has a higher probability of killing you. Phobia is based on fear more than reality. If you have never been robbed the fear might be a phobia but if you have been robbed say half a dozen times what may appear to be a phobia is actually based in reality.

This was a oddly worded post

I get sick like once a year maybe. I've taken one sick day in 10 years that was actually for a sickness.

But I have poop all over me and am gross apparently.

Number 1.

That's why I hate moms who carry little bottles of hand sanitizer and are constantly wiping it on their kids hands.

Then they bitch about why they are always sick.

Like everything else in life, moderation. So, somewhere in the middle. Neither extreme is healthy.

I enjoy pointing out new germ sources to germophobes who think they've covered all of their bases.

I'd just like to add that most of the folks that claim to be the picture of hygiene and cleanliness probably haven't washed their sheets in over a month.

I get sick once a year and 1 gallon of OJ kills whatever it may be within 36-48 hours.

People can go way overboard about germs. And they are still exposed to them anyways, definitely a losing battle. I’d rather just not live my life worrying about it

Exposure. You can’t build immunity if you’re never exposed to any germs.

The Dwight K. Schrute approach is to expose yourself to germs in order to build up a resistance to them, which makes you stronger. That's why he encourages co-workers to sneeze on his food before he eats it. He's never missed a word day due to illness, insofar as I know.

Who is to say that his method is wrong?
