What's the Ford Equivilant to the Chevy LS Engine?

For a resto-mod application. I have a guy willing to trade me a 68 mustang and am considering the build. I know Chrysler and chevy but not fords in this capacity.
I have seen the 5.0 coyote, but I would be looking for a take out motor and have seen where this engine does not work too easy in the old cars.
Any help would be appreciated.

Does a coyote fit in an old mustang? If so, go GT350 coyote. Flat. Plane. Crank.

With a new front suspension. My main worry is the anti theft system. I see ford has a wiring kit, but am seeing it only works with a crate motor, not take outs.

The Coyote is the closest thing, but it's not as cheap, compact or readily available.

Coyote is the LS equivalent at the moment, but compared to the SBC, the Coyote is quite large. Not ideal for a 68 Mustang engine bay. May not be super original, but your best bet is a 289, 302, or 351 Windsor.
ETA: I've ridden in a '66 notchback with a built 289 and it flat out flies. That would probably my choice of motor if I were restoring. A small displacement, rev-happy V8 in a light chassis..all the fun you can ask for.

302. Dirt cheap just like LSx and they've been using it for decades.
5.0 DOHC Coyote is relatively new.(2011?) I don't know if Ford guys use them or not.
size comparison of 4.6 DOHC (previous gen V8 Mustang) vs 5.0 OHV

For a '68 mustang:
289, 302, 351. Classic and readily available parts.
427 of you want to cram a monster in there.

Idk how easy it would fit into an older mustang, but the best ford motor I ever ran was the 4.6L 4 valve dohc. They came in late 90's lincons and early 00's mustangs and stuff. Mine was in a mach 1 mustang and it would howl when you hit the gas

I saw on a car show that HP Tuners couldn't get it figured out, but Diablo managed to trick the computer (with a few other mods) into bypassing the anti-theft system

Hot Rod Garage is messing around with a 351 Cleveland.

The small block Ford has more in common with the LS engines than the SBC. It being a 68 means a wider engine bay than a 64 1/2-66 since those cars came with big blocks (FE's). A Coyote should fit without too much hassle, if anything may have to massage the shock towers. Ford sells the control harness for their 5.0 Coyote crate engines and I'm sure it could be adapted to any pull out. They are great engines that are currently running mid 10's @ 3000# in the Coyote Stock class. That's a sealed stock Mustang engine with a spec tune, fuel, and headers. Only hiccup I have heard about is if you wanted to use the 6R60 trans as the Ford ECU doesn't control this and you need the cluster and maybe some others stuff from the donor car.
If it was me and I had the funds I would definately go Coyote over a 4.6. More power stock, higher rev limit, good economy, and responds well to mods. Keep it under 1000hp and the stock internals are sufficient. I wish I could swap a Coyote into my 07 Mustang GT but the computers are so incompatible that it's a very difficult swap. Last I heard only 2 or 3 people did it and all said never again. But in a 68 with the Ford harness it's pretty much plug and play from what I understand.

Forged 01 to about 03 Cobra motor. I was a Chevy LS engine fan boy for good reason. But adding boost to that motor...damn. Beef up your driveline for the torque.

Put an LSx in that mustang. That would be cool

I have read up on it, LS motors and the old mustangs dont mate together very well for a few reasons. But ideally an LS would be the best bang for the buck on the front end
