Sounds like he has a lot of experience getting what he wants regardless of the means or consequences.
Absolutely.
Let him work for what he wants and learn about tradeoffs instead of capitulating.

One day he can make it and be a tour guide too

Not paying for the kids stuff is fine but forcing him to pay that lady back is dumb. Who cares if she wants to buy him some stuff
She didn't want to buy him stuff. That's the point. He had money to spend. He just foisted it upon her when I told him he had to spend his own money on extras.
If he had come up and said "mister please can you pretty please buy me one too?" I probably wouldn't have an issue. Here's a 5 buck banana kid..
But when you come up to me and say "where's mine." And i say "well do you have money for one?" And you say "yes, but I don't want to spend it."
Well that doesn't exactly fill me with the spirit of giving.
Hell if I had gotten myself a banana and the kid asked nicely I'd have given him that one.
But you don't get to be rude AND entitled and not have me be a little salty about it.
If that makes me a monster then RAWR!

Right, I would feel bad for the kid because his parents weren't able to make the trip. I would've bought the banana and not have thought twice about it.

It requires intelligence, something I have never heard from you.

I applaud you, good sir. I guess these people have poor reading comprehension skills. They are also why kids grow up being entitled shits. These same people will then complain about them.
Maybe the kid wasn't being disrespectfull by expecting you to just buy him the banana. Maybe he thought they were part of the field trip. However, you explained to him that they cost money and that he was given money to use on his own so he would have to purchase his own. He then turns around and cons this woman into buying it for him. If that were my kid I would have greatly appreciated your actions.
You even explained that if the kid didn't have money you would have helped him out. Hell, you offered him some other options.

The little con artist is good.
He got the banana and kept his gift shop money.

Cool, and I'm not poor so I don't care that I had to spend a few bucks on a kid that asked for something.

Whenever I would be involved in field trips or the like, I always bought fun things for the kids in my group. Life is short and I know these little things mean the world to the kids.
Plus my kid gets to hear the others say how awesome a Dad I am.
And sometimes the kids' Moms wanted to thank me for being so generous to them.
Karma is a wonderful thing.

Most people would. But the kid did have the money and wanted something else.

I mean he still got it out of me at the end of the day.
In that instance I can take a little pity. He'd waited in line, everyone was in a hurry and he'd misplaced his money. I gave him an extra 5 so he could get his toy.
I didn't ask for The money back, because it was never about the money. It was about the principle.
Ask nicely and you might get help.
Act entitled and probably less so

I have kind of an opposite story. My daughter would always invite 2 or 3 of her friends to our annual south La. trip. We would go dancing (them), canoe the Whiskicitta, etc, have a great time. These girls I knew well, all my daughters life. I told them I was going to make decisions based on what I thought their parents would do. Well, on the trip home, we stop at a store selling old items. One of the girls was staring at a little necklace. I asked her what she was admiring and she said "I love that necklace." It was like $23. I get it and pay for it and give it to her. "I'm certain your dad would have got it for you." Well, she was happy and I could tell by her reaction she really didn't expect me to buy it (and maybe a little embarrassed). Anyways, we get home and later I turn on this movie. The fricking movie was about a child predator pervert buying the same age little girl (15) a $25 necklace. Frick.

i would have just bought the kid the banana if he had been good and behaved at that point. you dont know what his home life is and end of day a few dollars for an extra treat isnt hurt me one bit. He may remember that kindness one day and repeat it.
if he had been a snot nosed little shite up till that point though, id tell him tough shite.

Little while later she walks out with him and food. She had ordered for her kid and told me she ended up spending 13$ on him.
ETA:(No, she did not do it out of kindness. She had a budget too. She asked me if he had money and I said yes he did, I told him he needed to decide if he wanted to spend it on snacks or at the gift shop.
She said "well he just came while I was buying my son something and said he needed me to buy this for him. I didn't know what to do so I did."
So I told her he had a 20 and i'd make change For them. Which is what I did. Because she had only brought so much cash. Like most other people there.
Then she gave him 3 back so he still had some cash for the gift shop. He would have had 10 bucks. Same as I told mine they could spend. )
I told him he was going to have to reimburse her. He had a $20, I took it and made change with it and gave him the balance. Gave the 13 to the lady and she even gave him $3 back.
He looked crestfallen but I told him that he was sent with a lunch, that I had snacks and he'd have to manage his money if he wanted to go to the gift shop.
You should have minded your fricking business. That transaction had nothing to do with you.

Kid gets a banana. Mom gets a banana. Sounds fair.

He hadn't really been anything up to this point. He had been put in our group like 10 mins before. I had offered if anyone wanted a snack but they were ready to go. So I put the snack bag in the locker.

Had he asked for a banana nicely, or said that he wanted one and he'd get his money for it later, I'd have said "sure kid don't worry about it."
But the fact that he had is own money and just expected me to buy it, and then still keep his money just irked me. And he continued to act that way. Like no one had ever told him no, or that the world didn't work that way.

The damn mom brought it to me. She made it my business.
Should I have looked at her and told her "well, looks like you got GOT!"?
