What would you do if your SIL pulled a gun on your daughter??

Yesterday a friend of mine was telling me this story about this family we both know. The girl's Dad is a retired teacher. The daughter is in her mid thirties and is married to husband number 2 and has two kids with him. Seems the husband got mad at her and pulled a gun on her in the house with the kids there. They all live in Mississippi.
Cops arrested him and he is blaming the medicine that he takes for his back.
The father is of course very angry.
Now I can't the situation out of my head. One part of me says I would beat him to death and another part says that would only make things worse. What a horrible thing to have to deal with.
What would you do?

Move her out that house and get a divorce ASAP
Restraining order as well possibly. If the guy is pulling guns out randomly in rage, that is not safe for her and definitely not with the kids.

I guess I would immediately ask for a restraining order and visit the DA.
