re: What Would You Do If You Caught Someone Breaking Into Your Car At Night?

I had a person break in to a car around the corner. He woke us up with the car alarm and I saw him run past my bedroom window. I called 911. A few minutes later I see someone at my car door looking in the window. Turned out it was the cop responding to the call. He parked down the block and walked down my way. He was looking through the window to make sure my car hadn't been broken in to. Something to think about if you want to shoot first and ask questions later.

There was a time when I would have undoubtedly confronted him, with a gun or whichever weapon of choice I had handy.
Now that I'm a little older and have two young kids, I'm pretty sure I would just call the cops and/or shout at him in hopes of running him off. I know that sounds pussified, but I'd like to watch my kids grow up. This thing about Will Smith never seeing his kids grow up tears at my heart. I don't want that to be me, or my kids.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned hitting the panic button on your car on top of these choices.. That's what I'm doing after 911.

No way. I already thought about that. I'm white, it's cool.

It has probably already been stated, but you have the right to protect your life, not your property. Someone breaking into your car, when you are not in it, doesn't give you the right to shoot them.
As long as the robber doesn't try to break into your house, you should call 911 and let the cops do their job.

Well, they would be inside my house.
I would tell them to Freeze and keep their hands where I could see them.
If they made any sudden movements, I would shoot.
If they complied, I would call 911.
If they would flee, I would not shoot.

Which is bullshite.
Life, liberty and property are what western civilization is founded on.

call the police. I'm not going out there to confront anybody. I have insurance on my car.
I have a wife and 2 young kids, the last thing I'm doing is confronting someone with my gun and inviting a good old fashion shootout with the thief possibly firing shots in the direction of where my kids are.
I call 911, I grab my gun, and keep a close eye on the thief to make sure he doesn't try to get in the house, at which point then i'm shooting as it's last resort.

You forgot "Crawl into my safespace, cry and hope the bad man goes away" for all the SJW'ers.

And if you're coming out of your house, then obviously if he starts shooting, he's shooting into your house. So all of the guys stating "I'd come out firing", I wonder if they have kids and have thought of that angle. So if you have kids in your home, i'm not sure that's the wisest decision...over a car.

Exactly, I don't want to shoot holes in my car.
Chances are, he's gonna be in front of it are on the side of ot.
Best case is he runs away, keeping his hands up the whole time.

Assuming whatever is in my car is something replaceable, I would likely just observe and call the police. Obviously I'd be armed and watching to the extent possible. I'd try to make out the best description I could. Police are surprisingly quick to respond in this area, which is why I may not try and get him to flee by setting off the alarm.
If there was something extremely valuable to me that he might take, I may consider confronting him or at least getting him to abandon. But my GF is in the house and I have neighbors, so I don't want to start a gunfight in my driveway if possible. Nor do I want to voluntarily put myself in the position of being unsure of his movements and getting into a questionable shoot.
There was a guy in Hoover, Alabama who got killed confronting some thugs robbing his car a month or two ago. While this scenario makes it seem like we have the awareness upper hand, there are only a handful of outcomes from confronting someone in such a situation and about half of them are bad in a life-changing way.

Yeah, my cars are in a locked garage so my stance is a bit different. I feel like if they did all that to get to my cars, they would just as soon come inside.
If my car is on the street, I'm not playing Billy Badass. I have insurance and the correct number of orifices in my body already.
