I've posted here before about how I work in management where the owner is a "seagull boss" so I've been looking for a new position.

I received an offer from a very well known company with a stable history for a salary that is 60% more than what I make currently. Better benefits as well.

The only problem is they need me to start on Monday, September 26th because of some onboarding timelines so at as of today, I'm 1.5 weeks from the start date.

I am still waiting on some things like the background check and drug screen to be finalized, I have no reason to think those things will be a problem but in the past, I've always waited until it was basically a done deal before putting in a two week notice and that obviously isn't an option in this case.

Should I inform the owner today and take the very small chance that something falls through with the offer or wait until maybe Monday when it's probably a done deal and only give a week's notice?

Just wait, you don’t “have to” give the whole notice time, it’s more of a courtesy, I agree though you should wait before quitting, you don’t want to be left fricked on both sides. Rather slightly burn a bridge with the old job

If the shoe were on the other foot and they wanted to get rid of you would they give you a "Two Week" notice ?

NO

Plus all they can say to verify employment is that you worked there from date A to date B

Giving notice is not a requirement, unless you do not want to burn bridges or do not want to screw over fellow employees with absorbing your workload without notice.

I have seen way to many people fired or workforce reduced without any notice, so frick companies and any 2 week notice for the company itself.

If you are good toasting bridges and will not detrimentally impact a peer, just walk out.

Call in sick for a few days and then call your old boss after you've started the new job.

Get cleared by the new company, then resign from current company. Play it cool with current company until your you get your official start date. 2 weeks notice isn’t really a thing in my industry because you become a liability once you’ve indicated you are leaving

i would wait until it is confirmed and then notify. If it's only a weeks notice, so be it.
if your current company wanted to get rid of you, they would not give you two weeks to find something else.

This is the way I'm leaning, not very concerned with burning the bridge as I will likely never work in my current industry again and the owner lives in a different part of the country.

Just kind of a personal thing, I've always tried to give two weeks.

The owner has always gotten kind of angry when folks have resigned in the past so I'm not sure he wouldn't tell me to GTFO immediately.

Which is fine.

Just give 2 weeks when you find out. They won't want you to stay. They will tell you to GTFO anyway...

this. i have had two people over the years give me their two week notice. I immediately cleared my schedule and met them to gather their work owned items (credit card, keys, laptop, etc.) and said bye. While I appreciate the notice, you either work for me or you do not work for me.

Wait till Monday and give your two weeks. Explain the start date situation and I’m sure they’ll let you go immediately. If not, frick em and go anyway

Don’t ever quit one job, or even hint that you might quit, until you for sure know you have the next one line up completely.
