I think a part of that is how Tulane has shifted its academic focus post-Katrina. Following the storm, the university shuttered its engineering programs, which were primarily made up of students from the New Orleans area.

While Tulane had long been a safety school for Jews from the Northeast, Tulane basically severed nearly all of its ties to Southeast Louisiana to chase that valuable east-coast market.

As a result, the University has become the most exclusive in the country (by way of rejection rate) while its percentage of in-state students has plummeted, along with the general New Orleanian’s connection to the University.

No one in Baton Rouge would deny that LSU is a big part of that city’s identity, but Tulane isn’t really part of New Orleans’s identity anymore, and Loyola especially isn’t. They’ve become expensive places for New Yorkers and Southern Californians to party for 4 years and then go home.

Maybe because there were black people, with 100 page long criminal rap sheets and probably some armed robberies or even murders that they’ve gotten away with, there?

I would argue that before COVID the city was booming like never before. Ever. Those that don’t understand what was going on the last 10 years just haven’t paid attention. The only thing broken is/ was government. But government doesn’t make the city what was great. Government only represented what was/ is wrong with the city. Everything else is fantastic. But I honestly believe it will boom again once COVID is gone. Of course it’s the government killing everything via COVID. The destroya must go away. She’s a global plant anyway not from here.

In my experience with living in Nola for a few years, there seems to be a lot of people to move here from out of state and immediately begin being "God's chosen New Orleans-ians" because they think New Orleans is all about bohemian nonsense and "progressivism" and they complain about all of the Louisiana related aspects that impact New Orleans and they vote like where they came from.

There needs to be more people focused on working in the oil field and plants, getting good paying jobs without lifelong crippling student loan debt... rather than a bunch of know-it-all resentful brats with worthless liberal arts degrees.

Restaurants, hotel, and Airbnb were booming. Real metrics like population growth, companies expanding or moving in, and schools all remained stagnant at best.

I was one to downvote kingbob’s plan - I agree with #1, #8 and #12 - however -

#2 will never happen - most of the blacks always vote Democrat and the stupid hippie transplants do too - hell my NOLA family voted Democrat until very recently (2008)

#3 - most of the reason people went to work for the city was the salary, job security and other ‘benefits’ - not saying it can’t be overhauled but it will be very difficult for the people who have already parked their butts there

#4 - that stuff falls with the FQ preservation/historical society - they’ve got the goods on someone bc they’ve been bitch-asses for years - to solve this problem get rid of that society (yes they overlook the permits for the FQ)

#5 - that is a state law that NOLA can’t do anything about

#6 - I’m not against legalization/decriminalization of drugs or prostitution- but it will not get rid of the black market - the people selling who have been living at the edge of the law will not become legal just to be legal - they’re not going to pay tax to the big man - this cannot be taken care of with legalization

#7 - that’s messy for many reasons - the domicile requirements have been waived for NOPD for a while - however - it drives me up the wall when I see a NOPD vehicle parked at a residence in LaPlace

#9 - this is also a statewide problem - and it’s easily 50% of the parents fault, not sure if the city could really do anything about this

#11 - this just seems like a bad idea - and where would Arabi go? That’s St. Bernard Parish

#13 - Bayou St John is a lot better now than when I was a kid - trust me lol

#14 - this would entail cooperation from Jefferson Parish and lots of bribes for their politicians

#15 - if you think the RTA is bad - that’s bc you haven’t lived in a place with a bad transit system

Places where it has been legalized don’t see much of the illegal market surviving. The black market rarely can compete with a relatively free market when legit is an option.

I live in BR. The RTA is much better than CATS, but it still has a lot of room for improvement.

Arabi was a typo. I edited it. I meant Algiers. I’m not saying it needs to leave the Parish, but it should not be run by the east bank.

Google black market marijuana in Colorado - and like I said I’m not against legalizing - and I think it would be better for prostitutes if it were legal as well - but it’s not going to ‘just get better’ because it’s legalized or decriminalized (your neighborhood pusher is not going to start paying tax to the state out of the kindness of his heart) - because right now in NOLA no one is getting arrested anyway and those neighborhoods are hell holes

All transit systems could use improvement - but RTA is light years ahead of CATS - the streetcar is slow - that’s not going to change, and it shouldn’t

As for Algiers - my family is from the Channel - we always thought Algiers should be it’s own place - lol - just a joke - but apparently it was a neighborhood thing through the 1960s - not sure what to say about it - it’s always had it’s good and bad parts - like the rest of NOLA

Everyone thinks that legalized weed will bring some huge windfall of money. They forget that the state will get their hands on it first and frick NOLA put of their share in order to pay consultants and river boat pilots.

Not only that - but some of the guys I know would NOT go legit if they had to give a cut to the state - why should they? They’re doing fine just how they are. Plus if neighboring states don’t legalize it - they will sell it there as well - like one of the things happening in Colorado
