Symptoms. If I have it, I’d like to know so that I can avoid elderly/vulnerable friends and relatives.

I wouldn’t know. Haven’t had the flu since becoming working age.

Shouldn’t everyone be wearing a mask and social distancing no matter what?

That doesn’t 100% protect you from it though. No one has ever claimed that distancing and masks 100% will stop the spread. It certainly lessens it though.

But you know what else helps?

Staying the frick home if you have it.

We are heading down to Texas next month for about a week. Trip has been planned for months. Now, the in-laws have invited us to spend the first week of November with them in the Blue Ridge mountains.

We are considering getting tested between trips, but only because his parents are elderly and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to them and it was my fault.

I haven't been tested yet, but I also haven't had a reason to. I really don't think it's a big deal, though, and we can get tested for free.

I find it curious that people get so charged over simple questions.

I agree with you on all fronts regarding limiting the spread. This isn’t an anti-mask-social-distancing-testing post. I’m just curious about people’s threshold for getting tested. If this virus can be asymptomatic or mild cold symptoms, are people really getting tested for that? If not, when are they deciding to go in?

My family got tested a few weeks ago. My son came down with a 99.8 temperature and a runny nose. My wife had a dry cough. We missed two days of work/school waiting on results. I don’t know if we’d get tested again for such mild symptoms especially considering we only get so many days off for covid related reasons.

It took my son getting it and my job requiring it.

Yeah try doing all the "prescribed" safety measures offshore. It's impossible. I have three roommates.

You should be looking for the instant tests.

They’re limited. Everywhere in Birmingham has a small supply and it’s first come first serve. We found one place doing rapid tests and they had a clump of people waiting in line outside in the rain.

My 2 year old tested positive. I got tested before I went back to work. It’s not a big deal to get tested.

You're right, it isn't a "big deal".

However, the health dept via local media outlets spent the better part of two months pushing random people with no symptoms or possible contact to go get tested. That did two things: 1) It put perfectly healthy people into contact with likely sick people as well as medical personnel who were regularly in contact with sick people, and 2) It overwhelmed Alabama's testing labs and caused a massive backlog in cases.

It wasn't long before we had story after story of our labs being backlogged and tests taking weeks to come back. It was also around this time that schools started back and we immediately got stories about kids who tested positive. Those tests would have had to have a 2 or 3 day turnaround from contracting, to showing symptoms, to getting tested, to getting results. That simply wasn't possible.

By pushing every single person to "go get tested" they created a clusterfrick of problems. Finally, they quietly came to the conclusion that what they were doing wasn't the best approach. Since then, we haven't been urged to "go get tested". At all.

The current rapid tests give a ton of false positives

There is zero reason to get tested unless you’re hoping for positive for the social media attention.

Not that much, if I knew for a fact I had been in direct contact with someone while they were infected or felt like I had symptoms
I would immediately get tested. With a new born and at risk parents I see on the on the reg that seems pretty reasonable.

Now if I was a college student or weren’t in contact with high risk people...I wouldn’t get tested...ever.

If you have COVID antibodies, you can sell your plasma.

The Red Cross will teat your antibodies when you donate blood. Get tested and help out at the same time.
