That's awful. I imagine there's a ton of those stories in history.
Think of those whom died on November 11th, 1918. The peace had been signed. The generals and men in charge KNEW the war was over. KNEW the armistice would start on the elventh. Hell, that morning they knew exactly what time the armistice would go into effect.
Yet they still sent men out of the trenches to die. Up until the last minute.

No need to thank me, I didn't do anything but had he not made it I wouldn't be typing this today.

Point my gun up and fire fire fire.

I hope those men severely coked up out of their minds when they were sent out there. I wouldn't want any normal thinking person to be in that environment.

Im an OT baller, sooo, naturally, I would stride up the beach with a machine gun in each arm mowing down nazi's left and right. Walk straight up to the pill box and blow that motherfricker up. Save a few less fortunate comrades, then stride into the french town and frick the bitches while drinking their wine. The size of my cock would impress all.
there is no other answer. Errbody knows this.

Swim out to sea
significant number of casualties were drownings because of the men getting off of the boats in deep water and being weighted down by all of their gear

nothing ... whether you lived or died was almost completely random chance ...
say a prayer and hope you kill as many germans as possible ...

The Pacific Theater says "hi".
My plan would be to simultaneously leak from every orifice and pray that I don't freeze up and can run fast enough to make my way into a position at the base of the bluffs before an MG-42 bullet makes it into me. Then I'd worry about how to get up and over the bluff without getting shot.

Not coked up, but soldiers were methed out of their gourds in WW2. Not sure about the Americans, but the Brits and the Germans popped amphetamines like candy.

War is hell. I cannot imagine being in that situation. Let training and instincts take over and see what happens.

I think he's saying that the population at large was more manly and more patriotic. That's a valid argument.
I will say that I know several modern combat vets that will say they had it easy in their tours compared to WW2, Korea, and Vietnam vets. The scale of the carnage and casualty rates isn't really comparable to what we see today.

i know exactly what he's saying, and it's still stupid trying to measure someone's patriotism.
and obviously this is true. technological advances have changed warfare. the same could be said throughout history about the wars that preceded WWII as well.

It's not an out of bounds statement to say that 1940's America was more patriotic than 2010's America.
