What would have been the most insane natural phenomenon as an ancient person?

Think of a time before science a few thousand years ago. What would have made you assume it was the gods the most? I'm thinking this order:

1: Total eclipse
2: Earthquake
3. Northern Lights
4. Shooting stars
5. Tornado

Imagine you're just trotting along the plains midday like you have for year and all of a sudden the entire world gets black. You'd think it was the end. At the same time, imagine the first time they felt a major earthquake.

Are earthquakes really that bad when there are no major structures to fall on you?

Can you imagine if you showed a caveman an iPhone?

The earth is literally shaking. I’d imagine 5000 years ago that was a pretty terrifying thing to happen that you can’t explain.

I’d say a volcano erupting was probably a bigger deal, or a tsunami.

A hurricane would be pretty wild. Especially if you lived on an island and had no warning.

The first Europeans to experience a hurricane must've been terrified. Especially if they were still at sea.

Was looking into the "Its turtles all the way down" phrase this weekend and learned a few things relevant to the topic. The depiction of the world being supported by elephants was used to explain earth quakes. The elephants in turn are supported on a turtle, which somehow explains solar eclipses. Something about the turtle repositioning itself and its shell blocking out the sun. Apparently this same explanation/myth was common across India, China, and even Native Americans.

Something like the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 would have seemed like the world was ending to people in the ancient world.

Almost like a group of people carried it with them through their oral tradition as they migrated east

I just looked this up and the waves reached heights ranging from 15-170 feet high and as far as 3 miles inland. Could you imagine being an entire mile inshore and a wave several feet high comes sweeping over you?

Volcano or Tornado. Seeing a massive F5 tornado up close changes you.

Having witnessed a solar eclipse hit full totality, it was deeply unsettling despite knowing it was going to happen and literally tailgating to see it. If that shite just happened randomly without me knowing what it was or that it was supposed to happen, it’d be legit panic-inducing.
