Gorillas are are prey, not predators. They're vegetarians and are preyed on by leopards and occasionally crocodiles.

Tigers without a doubt. Those bad boys used to be all over the place before humans killed them off.

Could a leopard really overcome a gorilla? Maybe screw him up a bit, but one hit to the head, and I think the leopard is dead. And I never thought gorilla's interacted with crocs and the croc was strong enough to drown them at their average weight. I could see a young one, but an adult gorilla is very formidable to either predator to where I don't think they'd target them.

Who competed for land though? I don't think humans really ever competed all that much with bears, lions, and tigers. It was more the wolf that was our oldest enemy. Those were all truly over the place. A tiger is solitary, to where it's not that big of a pain in the arse so long as you have a few dozen people. Wolves though swarm in massive packs and are smart as shite. That's the animal most featured in folklore for a reason.

I have no fear of wolves. I would rather come across a pack of wolves than a tiger or polar bear.

I bet you wouldn't say that if you were armed with something. The numbers and tactics become much more formidable than the laters brute strength.

A pack of wolves won't even attack a full grown female moose with her calf.

That's more of a sign of intelligence than anything else. A human isn't going to do that either even though we're the top predator. Sure a bear might try it, but is highly likely to get killed over it.

There's a reason we've got a very thorough history with the wolf more than any other animal, and that's because it WAS the top predator before we came around. Orcas are also called the "wolves of the sea" for a reason, and its because they're THE apex predator. It's really not even a debate, and if we evaporated off the Earth tomorrow, wolves as well as large dogs would inherit the land.

It's a sign of intelligence because they know their limitations.

Which is why the bear and the tiger will never inherit the Earth. Sure they're powerful as shite, but if that really mattered, why isn't the gorilla in charge of the world? It's the intelligent that rule, not the physically strong.

Hippos are more brutal than any of these land animals we have mentioned, but they don't eat prey.

If Hippos were meat eaters the whole planet would be fricked.

Wolves are smart and if they teamed up in large masses they would be pretty insane. But that's not what is being asked. A wolf would not be the top predator.

crocodile. It's literally a dinasou

Actually...

Crocs came from a branch off of reptiles and dinosaurs are a different branch that occurred much later. Modern day crocs came about much more recently, after the dinosaurs.

So, figurative. Not literal.

But they WERE the top predator before we came along. I don't see how this is up for debate. They were the top predator from England to India to Japan to Mexico. It's by far the most well documented predator in history. In fact it's probably more documented than every other predator combined. Sure if a wolf is alone, it's going to be killed, but as a species its by far the most powerful next to man.

Hell, some of them outsmarted the system and became man's best friend. The dog speaks a lot of the wolf for its resilience and intelligence.
