if no homo sapiens

Neanderthal wins.
Develops speech and language akin to Basque.

Dont know about denisovans.

Papua new guinea natives have 10% non homo sapiens.
About 60/40 neanderthal and denisovan.

These are the ones whose succession plan is you kill dad or he kills you or you run off.

There wouldn't be a single one. For instance, the lion would be king in Africa, but there ain't many lions in Europe.

We're so far ahead of everything else that your question doesn't really make sense.

Ants, roaches. Wouldn’t have to be a large animal. Could do it with sheer numbers.

The answer is in history. Man killed off the great killing mammals. Saber Tooth Tiger, Great wolf etc. They would still dominate if man hadn't

Does an apex species have to be a carnivore?

If not, I vote for elephants as the apex land species.

Nothing on land is going to frick with an adult elephant.

Wolves
They multiply fast and they adapt to all climates. They have no natural predators outside of man.

Dogs probably would still be wolves or certainly not what they are now if we never existed.

Neanderthals weren’t humans? How the hell did humans reproduce with them if they weren’t humans also? I guess this would explain mermaids.

Also got me wondering if I was the father of some weird looking little piglets of a very nice looking hog I used to have. FML. I may have eaten one of my kids for breakfast.

Orca is the baddest animal in the sea.
I remember reading about a guy studying orcas and said he was following a pod and there was a great white closing in on them. He said the whole pod just kept course except one, that headed straight for the white. They when deep where he couldn't see them and about 5 mins later the orca came up with the dead white in its mouth.
