What will it take to finally get us widespread, quality hologram technology?

It is like no one is even working on it. Having Tupac dance around on stage is one thing but I feel like we should expect the option of personal use like I can project a hologram with my watch.

We will not truly advance in technology until this happens.

The Tupac thing technically wasn’t a hologram, it’s a visual effect called Pepper's Ghost.

Well they have this of Michael Jackson at his show "One" in Las Vegas..

It's produced by Cirque Du Soleil and it's pretty awesome without it, but then there is a part of the show where his "hologram" appears and the dancers suddenly appear to be his background dancers and they are in sync with him dancing. It's pretty fricking awesome.

Read up on volumetric displays.

I think holograms are leaning toward being considered a type of volumetric display. Last I checked R&D is working down two different paths.

1. Pretty much projecting information into an xyz medium that is “encased” in the projecting hardware.

2. Working toward a molecule that would serve as the medium and cause information such as a beam of light/laser to be sent in specific directions, which would create shapes.

The final tech will probably be the best of both of these routes while dropping the negatives

A good example of this and what will likely come from volumetric displays in the next decade or so is the projections used in Prometheus and Avatar to display geometry/geography. The movies mimicked it using very nice looking CGI but it was pretty accurate IMO

The future is customized hologram ads based on facial recognition. Imagine one of those small billboards you see walking around the city or ads on a bus stop, but they have facial scanners that immediately know who you are and what products to market to you. For one person it's an ad for Tide, and for another it's an ad for Pringles, for example.

I don't think we're too far away from this technology. This is what it will take for widespread quality holograms, advertising money.
