Has anyone mentioned walking to the local store and picking up a pack of cigarettes for your dad and telling them to put it on the ticket?

I remember in the mid70s we’d spend oir summers in Delan Springs, FL and my great aunt would send me and my brother walking to the 7-11 with $5 to buy her a carton of Winstons and an ice cream cone for each of us. I’d have been around 4-6 at the time. I also remember my grandmother pulling into the convenience store and sending me in with $1 to buy her a pack of Pall-Malls around that same time as well.

My dad used to send me to the convenience store for 2 cans of Copenhagen and a 6 pack of Old Milwaukee tall boys pretty often when I was 11-13 years old. In his Monte Carlo

Has Lawn Darts been mentioned yet? Because Lawn Darts were suicide attempts masked as fun and games.
I still have a set somewhere, but shhhhh.....don't tell anyone.

It happens - or more correctly it happened back in the party line days. There were 3 users on our line. the 2nd was an elderly widow that we knew. She almost never used the phone. And then there was the 3rd party on our phone.

Had to do that last year at a restaurant in a Dallas suburb. I dunno if it was Garland or Mesquite. One of those two.

Go to Europe, no credit cards just American Express travelers checks, go to the AE in major cities and hope for a letter from home, no other communication.

Helicopter parents were known to be insane.

Calls from western Washington State to the east coast had a time lapse because they were going by satellite.

A five dollar bill would fill my car's gas tank. with change.

Couldn't afford a good steak at the grocery store.

Returned soft drink bottles for so many cents per bottle.

Knew someone who bought his truck by collecting aluminum cans along the roads on a western Indian reservation.

Cars broke down a lot. Lots of nice people helped when cars broke down.

Somewhat interesting article in SI about this topic.

Also, no mentioned yet that I saw: magazine subscriptions and 10 CDs for a penny.

Glad at least someone is honest about this. "They don't make em like they used to" is bull. Cars today probably go twice as many miles on average vs ones from decades ago.

I once rode in the back of a pickup from Dallas to Shreveport. I question my parents parenting ability.

Been there, done that. It got a lot easier a few years later when gasoline engines were added to the mowers.

Littering while driving down the road,no AC,windows down, just chunk trash out the windows, haha.

The roads were nothing but a garbage can.Made an Indian cry.

Folks sewage lines going into lakes and streams, you could smell creeks well before you got to them.Had a neighbor kid get typhoid fever from swimming in Lake Hamilton,Lake Catherine was shut down due to pollution.Smoking cars burning oil,you could see the air you breathed.

These things have been corrected, hopefully MAGA don't take us back to that, that wasn't great.

Seat belts were an annoying thing that you’d sit on and burn the shite out of your leg in the heat of the summer. They certainly weren’t something you actually used.
