In your own words what was the goal in the creation of the European Union?

To create a unified political, economic, and military bloc in hopes of avoiding the types of large scale regional conflicts that plagued Europe for most of recorded history.

Unify a historically fractioned Europe into a cohesive economic entity.

Mainly setting trade policy, both with major countries externally as well as in promoting trade internally

Disaster for local sovereignty and autonomy

Yet here we are with Ukraine and the EU desperate to continue that conflict

Well genius, Ukraine is not a member of the EU.

In fact, the potential benefits of EU membership helped push another non-EU member to invade above referenced non-EU member.

Reduce inefficiencies by creating a unified economic and monetary association. They wanted to rival the US economy and overtake the USD. Ultimately they failed at those goals but the EU has been incredibly successful overall.

There's a reason why Russia has invested so much in preventing Ukraine from joining the EU, including an illegal invasion.

He's right. It was to keep Europe from fighting each other and it's worked. Ukraine is a non-EU state (that will eventually be an EU state) fighting another non-EU state.

Too early on a Saturday morning to come up with my own words, so I asked an AI for his (their?) opinion. Here it is:

quote:

One of the primary objectives of the EU was to facilitate economic cooperation and integration among its member states. This was achieved through the establishment of a common market, which allowed for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people within the EU. The EU also created a single currency, the euro, which is used by 19 member states as of 2021.

In addition to economic cooperation, the EU has also worked to promote social and environmental policies, such as labor rights, consumer protection, and climate change mitigation. The EU also seeks to strengthen its role as a global actor, promoting peace and stability around the world and supporting development in poorer countries.

Compared to what? In what ways have the member nations appreciably improved from what they were prior to its creation to now?

Easier to rule from Brussels than to continue focing an agenda through the legal and political structures of all those individual countries.

Compared to what?

Compared to Europe in the mid 1910's, or in the early 1940's.
