Awesome times back then, graduated HS in '81. you could jam to 70 southern rock, then switch over for new pop stuff, and even still hit the clubs that would transform into discos certain nights and had hair metal arriving also. Even country was distinctive from other times.
Music was definitely the best from 1970 to 1990.

'89. Berlin Wall comes down, effectively ending the cold war. Looked like nothing but peace and prosperity for the future. It really was a great time to be alive.

Sports wise it is hard to argue against 1986. LSU won the SEC in football, went to the Final Four in basketball, and made its first trip to Omaha in baseball.

Licensed to Ill released November 1986

And the '85 Bears. A great team with a lot of characters/iconic players, Super Bowl Shuffle music video, etc.

You nailed it, brother. Pro wrestling and America in the 1980s made for the perfect marriage. Violence, loud music, muscles, and the American flag.

I think the 80s started really being defined around 83/84.

Defined, but culturally and perception wise, the 80s started relatively early in what we perceive as 'decades' - pretty much with the 70s to 80s transition taking pace in 1981. You simultaneously had Reagan being inaugurated and the Iran hostages returning in January of that year, Raiders of the Lost Ark comes out in the summer, and MTV begins broadcast in August of that year.

As for the peak year, I'd agree with most others and say 1984, and if you were from the metro New Orleans area, you'd throw in (along with the rest of the national pop culture icons) the 1984 World's Fair. Best summer of my life working there.

Just for fun ( and to help prove the point), here's a a typical 1980's MTV Spandau Ballet video filmed in southern Louisiana, New Orleans, AND the World's Fair:

I'll Fly For You

If that ain't peak 80s, especially 'round here, then nothing is...

I'm gonna say this is when New Orleans peaked in modern times. I know the fair was a $ loss overall but NOLA just had an energy and buzz at that time. So much going on. I was in 6th grade.

Though '84, '85 and '86 were all very good to me personally, I can go with 1984 as tops.
