For me, the Miami Vice years were peak 80s. 84-89. A damn shame this country has changed so much since then.

84/85.

Classic movies like Ghostbusters, Footloose, Beverly Hills Cop, Karate Kid, 16 Candles, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Goonies, Breakfast Club, Teen Wolf, Rocky IV, etc.

Classic 80s TV: A-Team, Cheers, Knight Rider, Family Ties, Miami Vice, Who’s the Boss, Airwolfe, Cosby Show, Growing Pains, Moonlighting, etc.

MTV was becoming mainstream and videos and music were big. Quintessential 80s artist like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Prince, Wham!, Van Halen, Hall & Oats, The Pointer Sisters, Duran Duran, REO Speedwagon, ZZ Top, Huey Lewis & the News, etc. we’re at their peak.

84 Olympics, the Apple “1984” Super Bowl ad, Band Aid, New Coke, Jordan becomes Rookie of the Year, Live Aid, NES is released.

Not to mention, skating rings and arcades are at their most popular. (probably)

1. '87 peak year for me.. Was playing music, living large in the summer.

2. '81 -'82.. MTV first came into play and when movies like Fast Times and Porkies came out... and 80's Music really came into fold. Plus it was my senior year of HS.

Have to add '84 in the mix.. It was the year of the New Orleans World's Fair.. I just made 20 in December of '83, was selling Polo shirts at DH Holmes, and had a season passport to the WF which we went to party practically every night.

I graduated high school in May 1985 so I'm going with that.
As others have mentioned, a lot of great music and movies from that decade. Wore out the cassette tape (if you yungins know what those are) on that Van Halen 1984 album.

I'd say 1984-85.

Those 2 years showed so many awesome movies.
Arcade/video games at its peak.
Shopping malls were at its peak b/c of the mentioned arcades and mostly, record stores.
Mtv peaked and everybody watched music videos.
Fashion trends were predominant.
Musically, those 2 years were unmatched.
And America peaked as well.

However, 1987 musically was awesome, too. Almost every artist put out a great album that year.

As someone said, '80-'82 was an extension of the 70's.
I was a teenager in the mid 80's and I remember it vividly and fondly. It was a great time to be a teen.

Hits right in the feels..... I'm amazed at how disconnected kids seem to be today. It's sad.

Man did I waste tons of money playing Asteroids. Our high school installed one in the rec area and I would play everyday at lunch.

For me it was 1980. I graduated from college and that was when the carefree days of fun and games came to a screeching halt.

EDIT - My wife doesn't read this but I guess I better say 1984 since that is when I got married.

That said 84-87 for me.

1980, I met my wife and we started dating. I went to see Reagan when he came to Shreveport just before the election. Also watched the election returns and saw Reagan win a landslide.

'85

Reagan begins his second term
We Are he World/Live Aid
Space shuttle launches were a commonplace thing without any thought of danger
'85 Bears
Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the USSR
New Coke
Ozone hole discovered
Ballard finds the Titanic
Super Mario Bros. released
Tons of 80s movies released as already mentioned.

I think the 80s started really being defined around 83/84. Madonna and Cyndi Lauper release their first albums. Born in the USA is released. Reagan re-election campaign. Chrysler mini-vans. The '84 Olympics with the USSR boycott of the LA Games.

Sports wise it is hard to argue against 1986. LSU won the SEC in football, went to the Final Four in basketball, and made its first trip to Omaha in baseball.

Nationally, you had Miami and Penn St in the Fiesta in a rare for its time #1 vs #2 battle, It was the greatest MLB postseason in history (even as an Astros fan). Clemens struck out twenty in a game, Doc Gooden made his third straight all star team at 21 yrs old, and Bo Jackson made his MLB debut. The NBA was at its peak of the Magic/Bird rivalry. The Celtics won the title only days later to go thru the Len Bias tragedy. At 46 yrs old Jack Nicklaus won The Masters, and at 54 years old Bill Shoemaker won the KY derby. At 19 yrs old Mike Tyson fought 13 times going from an unknown to heavyweight champion.

Hell, even internationally Greg Lemond became the first American to win the Tour de France and Argentina won the World Cup when coke fueled Diego Maradona went coast to coast in one of the greatest goals in history and gave us the "hand of God" goal.

And Hoosiers was released.
