oh it was VERY VERY international.
i shudder to think that i lived there and was fearless walking to the bars & LSU all hours of the day & night.

It was Xanthus during that time, if I recall. (Later, just 'X'). Unless you mean the 2 story place across the street. That was the full on gay bar, Neimans. Xanthus was more mixed gay/bi/straight which was unusual for the time, especially in Baton Rouge.

It was a shell station, owned by Crowe Peele. He was an LSU legend from the 1950's. He was the NCAA heavyweight boxing champ. I always found him to be a nice guy.

Maybe. It looks so different now along that stretch. I think it was just a small place in that row of shops, and not a stand alone place like Raoul's . It might have been where the Chi Omega shop is now, or it might have been in the spot where Barcaria's building now sits.

I knew Crowe Peele. He bought the Texaco on Jefferson Hwy at Floynell around the time that Shell shut down. He seemed to have some brain damage from his boxing days by the time I knew him. I had some friends who worked for him over there.

You nailed it. Do you remember it's location along that block? As I look at Google Street View of the current configuration, I think the building might have been where Barcadia's parking lot is now located. They must have torn it down. Does that seem correct?

I remembered the name - argon. I think it was T-Trax across the street, which we would also frequent.

I've heard that the reason it is called Splash now is because there is an indoor pool located somewhere in that building. Have no idea if that's true though. Imagine how nasty that pool would be with 30 years of drunk gay men partaking in late night activities.

When it was neimans I went there for a skinny puppy/severed heads concert
Mung was there that night
Eta I think neimans closed in 88 or so and that's why most of the gays ended up at xanthus for awhile
