I caught some flak in another thread when I said there was talk of Japan surrendering before the nukes were dropped. Fire bombing Tokyo the tune of 250,000 innocent civilians deaths had many working on figuring out how to surrender and keep the Emperor in charge.

The fact that we had to drop a second one to make them pay attention should tell you all you need to know.

When we played war as kids we made the enemies say Lollipop as a password

Can you name a Biden policy that you favor over Trump or are you one of those retards who voted Biden because Trump tweets mean things?

We probably bombed Japan because we needed to show the world what we could do. This of course saved a bunch of American lives but also brought the others out in groves

Did you just call God evil?
Not at all. It’s more a reference to His Sovereignty.

I form the light, and create darkness:
I make peace, and create evil:
I the Lord do all these things.

because the Nazi’s never had a chance of conquering Russia)
Most of the Soviet Union's agriculture and practically all its industrial base was west of the Urals. With Germany not having to worry about a second front in the west, and Russia not having lend leade aid, Germany would have been very capable of conquering the parts they were interested in.
Digesting the western half of Russia was to be a multi generation endeavour. Siberia was left for the indefinite future,if ever.

Not renewing Firefly for a second season.
Absolutely incredible Space Opera, but would not have grown as iconic as it did had it continued.

It did, but the fire bombing caused far more damage than the nuclear bombs did. Also, take into account the soviets invaded manchuria at the same time.

feel like the greatest necessary evil in history is when the United States and the Allies had to ally with the Soviets in World War II.
Not even the “greatest evil” in that war. Much less history

Yeah, I don’t think a Nazi controlled Europe (with the exception of Russia, because the Nazi’s never had a chance of conquering Russia) would have been good for world peace.
As opposed to what? I imagine it would’ve been pretty similar to how it turned out

Nuking Japan comes to mind
While we (the US) were the primary beneficiaries, setting us up for global domination for the foreseeable future, in a broader sense it eliminated wars between major powers.
Even with the war in Ukraine, I get the sense Russia felt out the US and Western Europe first, and said "we're going to take X. And not further. So ease off the trigger, ok?"

Only because that's what we were told as an excuse to do it.

Communism is worse than Nazi National Socialism, which is really saying something. We ended up spending the next 50 years dealing with it as a super power and are still dealing with aspects of it today.

Truth. There was a peace faction lobbying for keeping the Emperor and some of their conquered colonies. The US would only accept total surrender. Of course, there were also factions arguing to fight to the very last man, woman, and child.

When you tell a culture that honors dying in combat that you'll only accept their total unconditional surrender, you're saying they must fight to the last child that can hold a gun.
Also, if we weren't out in the Pacific creating our own empire, would we have crossed paths with the Japanese?

How on earth did we all manage to make it through the dark ages of 2016-2020. Thank god we have someone who is fit for office in the White House now. God you people are insane.

Shooting ol'yeller
Our dorm at college had a TV room. Old Yeller was playing, and the toughest guy on the football team (I think Fincher was his name) was watching. He teared up when Old Yeller was shot, left the room mumbling "I'll never watch that fricking movie again ... frick that."

The thought of using the bomb was to save lives. The propaganda Japan used was the Americans were evil and ate babies. If we did not use it, Japans civilians were devoted to fight to death.
The crimes the Japanese committed against prisoners of war, and the Chinese population were worse than the Germans. Japanese soldiers would play a game of throwing babies in the air and stabbing them with swords.
