If you want to see a vanished world, there is a video on YT showing a tour of a Yat neighborhood c. 1992
Just people going about their lives, walking around, doing laundry, etc... But it's like seeing ancient Rome come to life
You got a link to this specific video?

It was done by the guy who just died a year or so ago, "Mr Yat". Can't recall his name though.

That’s what I remember. The cops kept the crime out of the quarter for the most part. They would crack heads on anyone back then.

Was going to school in the city and spending almost all my free time getting wild uptown.
Meh, wasn't too terrible
ETA- easily my favorite college years...and yes, NOPD was corrupt and NOT to be fricked with. Respek

The violent crime was way more confined. Now it’s spread out a good bit more.

And it occurred nation-wide simultaneously, so no state specific effect is correlated to the crime drop. And the crime drop occurred in other countries around the same time. In short, there is no legislation or policy implemented in 1993-1994 that adequately explains the crime drop on its own.
Read freak o nomics .
Roe v wade law was enacted 1972 .
Count 25 years and lots of criminals that would have otherwise been born, we’re aborted….
Not saying that’s the reason but it’s awefully uncanny that the crime rate dropped nationwide all at the same time.

The first time I visited NOLA was in 1990. I recall the cops not taking any shite - at all. They would bust your arse with the quickness. I also don't recall having any trouble in the Quarter with crime, even though we were young, drunk, stupid and had no idea where we were going.
The crime was there but it was contained to specific places. Sure it sometimes spilled over but the tourist areas and certain neighborhoods were patrolled and kept safe. As it got worse people left. Old Metairie and the north shore exploded.
Katrina forced and provided opportunities for even more people to leave.
There was enough residual old money and business interest to float for a while, but the problems are too great and too long ignored for any easy fix if they can be fixed at all.
Crime is everywhere now. The government is absolutely corrupt and defunct. Businesses have left. The police are understaffed and without leadership.
And there’s no one left who cares. Everyone with sense is gone. And anyone who is left in the parish supports the policies or turns a blind eye.
Orleans Parish is a bloated corpse slowly decaying. It is such an unbelievably depressing and pathetic reality.
A city with so much beauty and history and potential and culture and so much to give is being destroyed and dismantled. It hurts to think about it. It’s like losing lifelong friend. I love New Orleans and I cant imagine stepping foot in the city anymore.

But doesn’t quite explain the parallel decline in Canada.
Canada had 20 year abortion liberalization that occurred between 1969-1988. It wasn’t fully liberalized until 1988.
Not that Canada’s crime drop has to be explained by the same causes as the US crime drop, but they fact that they were concurrent and parallel suggests a common cause.

I think they also fiddled around with how crime statistics would get reported over time so a murder one year might be classified as something else another year.

They at least made sure the tourist areas stayed as safe as possible.
I know at one time the only way you could be a NOPD was if you lived in NO. Is it still like that?

i kinda think that crime back then was mostly confined to “bad” areas, and you just knew where not to go.. whereas now i think it bleeds over a lot more to areas like the Quarter and Uptown .
Back in '94 they still had the District Attorney patrolling piano bars and places tourists hung out.
