re: What vehicles still have live 12v outlets (cigarette lighter) when the vehicle is off?

I have a 2017 F150 and I'm pretty sure mine powers all the time. Older trucks and SUVs I've owned (usually American) have always been full time power, engine on or not. But I'm pretty suburban nowadays and in less situations where I'd have really depended on that feature.

On the 5th gen rams you can move a fuse and switch from ignition only power to all time power
This is Not how fuses wotk
It could be how they work. If there are two circuits, then moving the fuse from one to the other could simply energize a switched condition vs always on condition.

My 2015 ram is weird. It doesn’t seem high tech, but it’s surprised me. If I leave my phone plugged in it will not charge when I shut the truck off, but if I get back in. It’ll start to charge even before I put the key in. Something in the seats? I have no idea.

Any vehicle can if you want to make it so.
Currently my car leaves the voltage live for 2 hours after I turn it off. That's perfect for my camera system. I need it more for on jobs not so much at home.

Most American vehicles do.
Most foreign vehicles do not.

A phone charger or dash cam, etc isn't going to hurt your battery.
Over time it will if the engine is not running in order for the alternator to charge the battery.
Also, with "smart charging" logic that most vehicles built in the last 10 years have, the alternator duty output is usually 20-30% at idle, so the battery is never really charging, it is just being maintained, which, over time, develops a memory in the battery as far as max charge capacity goes. It slowly drops over time, until you have a weak battery without the ability to accept a full charge.

It is pretty simple to get fuses to work like this. You could have two runs to the fusebox from the 12v outlet (or anything else) and with the fuse in one position it could always be powered and moved to another it could only receive power with the switch turned to ACC or ON.
This.
I have an '02 Jeep with the clutch protection switch, w/o power you can't start the vehicle. However, they have also wired it where if you move a fuse to a certain spot, it bypasses the safety which I did. Works fine.

I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee with the cig light charger that stays on when the car’s off.. but , i was surprised when i bought it to find a 115v, 150 watt electrical outlet on the back of the center console.. looks just like a regular wall outlet in ur home, and charges things fast.. but it only works when car is running and a button is pressed on the dashboard to turn it on.. it’s the first vehicle ive ever had with an electrical outlet, is this common ?
ETA i mean besides the newer F150s and EVs

This was one advantage of having an older truck. During long power outages, I was the only one who could charge phones without having to sit in the car.

There is a lot of them with an AC inverter like that, and they all have it set up so you have to have the engine running to supply power to that outlet.
It would kill a 12V DC battery in less than a half hour running something that is 110-115V.

Wife’s 2008 Escalade had one that stayed on in the console. After she left the power inverter plugged in and killed the battery two or three times, I threw the damn inverter in the trash
