You can probably spend just a little more and get an in ground liner pool with a basic 5' section of concrete around the pool area.

Gunite pools starting around $30k in the LC area.

An above ground with a nice deck looks fine. It's what I have.

You must be lying because I was told in this thread a decent pool starts at $60k.

actually most consider 50k to be a minimum. there's always definitely means to cut the price down from hacking the contractor pricing, shopping subs, shopping materials etc. these pool guys try to clear 30% plus profit for being a paper contractor.

If you need any help with design ideas, functionality over form, etc. let me know. I'll be glad to help.

Will, that is exactly what my wife wants. We are planning to install the pool next year.

Any advice you can give would be appreciated. Especially on how you kept the costs under 50K. Did the $46K include the outdoor kitchen? ETA: never mind, just saw the below:

Pool was $46K. Outdoor kitchen was $70K - $75K.

Dude, above grounds aren't that trashy. It's your best bet. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to install, and cheaper to get rid of.

I actually advise people to go above ground instead of in ground. Especially if they are new to pools. Take care of an above ground first before you take the plunge to deal with an in ground.

I've got a back deck about 4 ft off the ground and I'm probably just going to buy a rectangle intex pool and add the deck around it. Like you, I'm nervous I might get tired of the maintenance and I don't want to drop several grand on it. Also I just want something to soak in after yard work or drink a margarita on a float. Something to this effect:

I am so freaking tired of buying chemicals and keeping it clean.

This is what I was afraid of when I got my pool. I paid $200 for Intex 14'x 42" Ultraframe pool. Easy to put up but also easy to take down come October. Able to put the pool cover on at night and during the day to keep leaves out along with keeping pool levels in check

Where did you get those rocks in your raised flower bed? That's exactly the type of rocks I'm trying to find for my flower bed.

Did you pay for it or put it into your mortgage?

No, I initially took out a personal loan (unsecured, couldn't beat rate at 5.8 % vs. risking my house) for my pool.

It has since been paid off (had cash for outdoor kitchen).
