Air force cyber security. 20 years and retire and keep that check while you work in private sector

My daughter is an RT (respitory therapist). Excellent hours. Makes damn good money and she said there is a huge shortage right now

Airline pilot. After 10 years or so of working your way up with a major carrier, you can be making well in excess of $300k/year working 12-13 days/month.

Start your onlyfans page. College girls are in high demand and this will pay for your living expenses plus truck note. If you are a little overweight; get a prescription for that weight loss medicine.
Now that your expenses are taken care of, start an HVAC company. With global warming, more people will need new A/C units than ever before.

Building Science is another great one. Upon graduation, you will have numerous jobs to choose from and most will be approaching 6 figures right out of the gate.

Tradesmen bust their arse and a small number make maybe 110k. That's nothing. You'd do better owning the company but if it was that simple far more would be doing better.
If you're intelligent, medicine or dentistry. If you aren't, salmon gutter.

Biomedical engineering with a focus on nanotech. Be on the forefront of devices that will heal from the inside
This is bad advice.
Major in a core engineering discipline. The biomedical companies are not recruiting from LSU either. Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Civil are the engineering disciplines to major in. You can also move into supply chain after learning the business as an engineer.
Not to be mean, but the people who upvoted biomedical are ignorant.
Healthcare is good, but competitive to get into. I would avoid just majoring in Biology unless you plan on being perfect in undergrad to be competitive. Come up with a backup plan. Major in something that has a better exit strategy if it doesn’t pan out such as a core engineering. FWIW, upper end nursing (like nurse practitioner) wages are getting eroded by nursing school diploma mills.
If you go into a hard science expect to go to graduate school/professional school. Compete to get into a good one. Undergrad doesn’t have to be more prestigious than LSU.
Data science is an add-on and not a core thing. A data scientist is just a resource if they are not a process expert. Technology will continually make tools to make it easier for others to do these correlations and analysis.

quote:What? Master plumber in LA averages 65k. Another site had the average overall at 98k. That's nothing.
Trade schools right now are a ticket to print your own money, if you enjoy the work and become good at it. Plumbing, A/C repair, electrical, welding

The cash game is strong in plumbing.

What would you recommend to an 18 year old heading to college today in terms of a promising job/career with lots of growth, high demand, and potential going forward?
Not medicine.

Anesthesia and it's not even close.
Have a friend who is a Nurse Anesthetist and makes ~$200k. He doesn't have the liability concerns the Anesthesiologist has and loves his job. Not sure this field is for everyone though, but if you're medically inclined, I think you're right about this field.
Otherwise, I agree with many posters, trades are the way to go unless someone is very interested in being in a profession you absolutely have to get a degree in. College is a blast though and it shows an employer you're able to complete tasks, be responsible, and they can count on you. I got a BFA degree that has nothing to do with what I'm doing now (shocker), but it led me to many connections I still have today and is what helped me become very successful/happy.

Pharmacy is a terrible career choice these days, unless you can get a job in a hospital, and those jobs are few and far between.
