Could’ve been badass with Bulow, Kincaid, and Red River all right there

2 interstates intersect there. Close to major waterways. Seems like it should be bigger than it is. Or, at least, have better amenities.
You'd think it would be bigger, getting population & business overflow from NO, then later BR

Monroe.
this may be the correct answer for all of America.

Delta airlines starting place, whatever centurylink is calling itself now, numerous other decent endeavors all fumbled.

Is this the St. Landry Parish courthouse or that red brick building across the street?

Bogalusa,

The Interstates avoided it and it dried up on the vine.

I think there were two reasons. The first is that the state offered Opelousas a courthouse or a small universtiy (what was then SLI) and Opelousas government chose the courthouse. Then Herbert Heymann donated the land in what is the Oil Center in Lafayette under the condition that it be used to foster O&G development. Lafayette took off compared to Opelousas and they eventually lost the courthouse as well.

Is this some sort of measurement of success for an area?

My grandparents were there immediately after WW2, as it was a step up from Caldwell parish, and they wanted to make a life of it. My grandfather was a fireman there in 50s/60s. My old man graduated from Wossman in 68, which is the first year they integrated Wossman I believe. Monroe once had a prayer.

Ruston is in pretty good shape with desirable attributes. College town, major interstate and 167 exchange, future development in the works, travel ball fields and courts, etc.

They are lacking a lot too, with entertainment, airport, Sam’s/Costco, or decent hospital. If they can get those sorted, it will really take off. I just don’t think many residents are that interested in it booming.

New Orleans used to be that much bigger… used to be over 600k back in the day. Now it’s not even 400k

Lest not forget Coca Cola, and State Farm’s regional HQ was there before they moved to Missouri. GM had a plant that made air conditioners there and Johnnys Pizza used to be edible. Major Interstate, rail center, navigable river and decently located between Dallas and Atlanta.

To this day, it’s hard not to travel around the country and not meet someone either from Monroe or had family there. Weird that it never boomed. This new super computer thing Elon is building at Holly Ridge might wake them up.
