As kid, would go to Des Allemands, LA to great aunt's house next to bayou gauche and see bugs (like yours) I had never seen before. Bugs from Mars.

Those bugs in the OP were very common where I grew up in North Alabama. We always called them snake doctors. Might be incorrect, but that's what we called them. Never knew of anyone to get stung by one.

I've seen those. I declared war and won because I was scared.

However, that thing did not scare me near as much as the GD cicada killers I discovered here in middle TN.

There are plenty of them in LA as well, at least in years with a lot of cicadas. Supposedly they aren’t aggressive at all. But IDGAF, any wasp that big is evil.

Sir, that is a “Robber fly”

The robber fly (Efferia aestuans) is one of over 7,000 robber fly species in the world. Its body is covered in dense bristles, and it has a small, sharp snout that can be used to stab its victims, paralyzing them. It will often attack other insects, including beetles, butterflies, moths, and even bees.

We had those cicada killers all over the place when I was a kid in Kentucky. They had their nests/burrows dug out in the dirt under most of Mom's shrubs and hedges throughout the yard in the summer.
No one ever got stung by one, but they were as big as hummingbirds and would buzz by us in the yard like Air Force fighters! Terrified the shite out of us. We called them "sand hornets".
