How many of your non-Southern, southern states have you actually been to?

I get that and I agree. Alternatively, when I hear the South being used disparagingly - poor education, poor households, racism, etc. - I don't think of South Carolina or even Georgia. Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi are the three that come to mind when someone is trying to look down on the south.

Roughly. But not automatic. Because you have a few Parishes like Evangeline and Avoyelles that are cajun as shite that are north of I-10. But I-10 is a fair enough guideline

This is correct

Even though you could easily shite on the South using parts of GA and most of SC.

True. The good south in the Media is East TN, Ga, SC, and North Carolina.

The shite south is AL, MS, LA, and north FL

Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky,

I wouldn't put these in the "South"

Kentucky and West Virginia are mountaineers, while very similar to southerners, they aren't "southerners"

Carolinas, Arkansas

I would put the Carolina's and Arkansas in the same group... kinda fringe worthy - with South Carolina being the most "southern" of the 3, in fact in a list I would put South Carolina and keep out the other 2 most of the time.

quote:

Florida and Louisiana

For both of these, the North is Southern - the South is not

quote:

Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee

This is the Heart of Dixie - as you move away from the heart of dixie, the less "southern" you are.

And you've also got parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche that don't really jive with the rest of South LA IMO, but I-10 is as good a border as any.

Interestingly, I've met a few Northerners here who tell me that DC is a Southern city. I was a bit stunned when I heard that and argued otherwise. (Every southerner I tell that to gives me that same confused look )

Of course being where it is by design, it's probably a mix of both. It doesn't feel Southern to me but I've never lived in a Northern city to compare it to.

Yeah, that's not to say that LA, AL, and MS are the worst of the bunch, but they catch all the flak.

This is ridiculous. yea South LA is not stereotypical southern and the culture is different than Selma Alabama but the the cultures of the low country in SC and GA are different than the customs in Appalachia but its all still Southern at its core

These are the truly Southern states:

Alabama
Louisiana
Mississippi
Georgia
Arky
Tennessee
Texas
SC

That's it.

Kentucky is NOT the South. Oklahoma is NOT the South. Virginia and North Carolina were part of the Old South, but no longer truly 'Southern'. I would consider the part of Florida NORTH of Tampa to the panhandle to be part of the South, but as a state, it isn't either.
